September Auction Results: How much our IS's go for at auction
#16
Lexus sells massively more 250s than 350s... up to 2010 something like 80-90% of all 2ISes sold were 250s...which kinda means the 350 is the opposite of popular in that sense. I'll be very curious to see the final 2011 model year numbers to see the impact offering the 350 in AWD finally has.
A lot more 250s get re-sold because a lot more 250s are sold in the first place. That's not necessarily the only reason you see more 250s for sale, but it would have to, mathematically, be the primary one.

Yes, give me a minute and Ill hook it up.

My brother worked at Manheim auction in Ca for years. These cars are NOT in prime shape, and in many cases some unscrupulous buyers sneak in to disconnect sensors to make the car run like crap so they will go for less. The problem arises that if that sunscrupulous buyer does not win the auction, then sadly someone gets a car that has a gremlin that gives the poor car a bad name.

Also the seller can deny any winning he wants if the car doesn't sell for the amount he is looking for. If a dealer buys a car he can get a post-sale inspection for $90 per car. If the car fails the inspection, the buyer gets his $90 back plus his money back for the car. If the vehicle passes the inspection, the buyer pays everything. How do I know this? I go to the Manheim auction!
In the end, your brother was blowing smoke up your butt brother.

Sounds like your brother is blowing smoke up your tail. I'm not saying other dealers might not mess with cars but it has NOTHING to do with the final sale of the vehicle in the auction line. My dealership buys 150 cars a month from Manheim and we sell about 60 cars a month there. Only dealers have ability to enter the auctions, not just everyone off the street. Pulling sensors and making a car run worse DOESN'T matter as the people of Manheim drive the cars through the auction line, not the seller. Potential buyers have NO CLUE what they are about to buy except what it says on each lanes TV or if they walked the parking lot prior to the auction starting. Remember, the auction line is a continuously moving line of cars going through 14-20 different lanes for hours on end. The only time the cars stop is when the bidding begins then once the sale is over the car drives off. Each auction line has a green, yellow, or red light which is in line with the vehicles conditions as presented from the seller. Check engine light? Auction runs it under a "Yellow light." Nothing wrong with the car? Auction runs it under a "Green light." Wrecked and doesn't run? (these are on tow trucks) "Red light."
Remember if these were cherry cars, the dealerships that traded them in would normally keep them for themselves. If as a mechanic, and a buyer for a smaller lot at the time, I could still get an expensive turd now and then... we often would just send it back to Manhiem and take the loss... If it is a clean car, but not one your lot gets much traffic on.. you call your freindly "x" dealer and sell it directly to them... no auction fees or hassles.. and they return the favor.
There are professional wholesalers that do this every week all year long... that is how they make their living and not only do they have all the experience, but they know exactly what to look for and have all the techie tools to have the advantage... Yes dealerships make profit.. that is how they stay in business, and sometimes amateurs can "beat the deal" at auctions, but even with my experience... I now let the "pros" find them for me... and even they get bit sometimes... So not so much "smoke" as one might think.

Its not Black Book. It's Galves. Where do people get these names from? Black book? Whoever made that up just wanted it to sound shady or something. You can go to galves.com and pay $5 for 24 hours or $10 for a week's access and put your car in to see what a dealer will give you. The all use galves.
And there is NO galves to kelly blue book comparison. KBB is BS and goes off of MSRP, Year, Mileage and condition. Galves takes real world prices into account, availabilty and demand.

Many dealerships use the Black Book which bases its appraisal value on wholesale auctions. Their staff attends roughly 50 car auctions a week to help them determine the pricing for a car. The Black Book provides values for trade-ins and retail price.
For example, if you plugged in a 99 Dodge Intrepid to all three pricing guides you would receive the following trade-in results:
Kelley Blue Book: $3,075
Black Book: $1,515 - $2,760
NADA Orange Book: $4,275

Always good info. Had access when I worked at Car Max.
All the dealers around here use Black Book/Manhiem when I try to trade in a car. They always say "well this is what they market is bringing," I always try and do the KBB trade in price, but they never go for it when selling them a car outright lol!

Who would anyone attend 50 auctions a week to determind value of cars when they can see the post sale results online?
I've NEVER heard of black book or blackbookusa.com and I'd venture to say If I called 10 dealers in your zip code, most of them use galves. I've been to at least 30+ new car dealers in the past 5 years for myself, friends and family and EVERY SINGLE one uses galves and sometimes manheim pricing to determine value. Maybe it's just a Tri state area thing but in NY, NJ, and CT, all they use is galves.

I think I got slightly ripped off... Payed 30K for an 08 Black IS350 with Sports Package/Navigation in great condition. The car had only 17k miles and was purchased last year. What do you guys think?
