Was a new driveshaft input seal replaced? I'm only assuming there is one there.

And there's nothing wrong with getting new OEM bolts. I did the same thing with new final drive bolts when I installed a different FD onto my Civic's Quaife LSD.

Yes I am replacing all of the seals including the pinion seal. My car's basically brand new, there's no sense having a leaking differential, heh.

Project is comming out nicely. I can't wait to see it done and on the driving experience.
I've also begun to price out the rear diff to do it to my car if you are sucessfull.

Also correct me if I'm wrong but

M96= Open Diff ?
M98= LSD?

Y not just replace the open diff on the is250 with the is300 lsd diff that u got??? instead of replaceing the hole "pumpkin" .....that just seams more work to have to condition the is300 lsd with all new stuff that u r doing, u prob have to change all the bearings as well because those prob have alot of miles on them, if ur replacing the bolts just to be safe, them u should fully disassenble the is300 "pumpkin" machine wash everything and replace all bearings and seals, press everything in and retorque......Wouldnt it be easier to just remove the LSD out and place it in ur "new" is250 rear pumpkin!?!

There are various ways to tell, depending on what information you have. There is the axle code on the car's information label, the sticker on the differential, looking through the axle hole, or pulling the diff cover off.

On the IS300 information label, the axle code will be listed:
B01A = 3.73:1 (MT) Open
B01B or B01C = 3.73:1 (MT) LSD
B03A = 3.91:1 (AT) Open
B03B or B03C = 3.91:1 (AT) LSD

On the IS300 differential sticker, the code will be listed: (My sticker was so old, it could no longer be read, so I had to check the actual diff inside to confirm)
M82 = 3.73:1 (MT) Open
M86 = 3.73:1 (MT) LSD
M96 = 3.91:1 (AT) Open
M98 = 3.91:1 (AT) LSD

If looking through the axle hole, you can tell:
Open:

LSD:

If you pull the case off you can tell:

Hope that helps.

He can do that but there is also the step of shimming the diff which I personaly hate doing.

Take it this is my first RWD car. In the past all my cars have been FWD and most of it comes from my Integra that I still have and track when time permits.

I don't want to disassemble my stock diff. It's basically brand new, and I want to be able to go back if I want to later. Plus, what I'm doing to the IS300 LSD is way easier than setting up a differential. There is no indication there is any issue with the current bearings either, replacing them would also mean resetting up the pattern and preloads. Plus I wanted to try the 3.91:1 gearset.

As for the bolts, I'm replacing them because tge other ones looked ugly, no other reason.

Nice pics to show the differences. Basically if you see a diff pin, you've got an open diff. No pin, you've got an LSD.

Hope all works out well for you on this DIY swap!

Got the last of the parts in and it's finally ready to go into the car. It will be going in on Saturday, I'll post a few install pics and my initial reactions then.

Thanks

No issues, no regrets, I consider it worth every penny.

The turn-in on cornering is quite a bit nicer, and the extra traction is also noticeable on hard cornering. I've also since put in the factory X-Package/Sport/F-Sport shocks and springs, along with the F-Sport accessory sway bars. The entire package has made the car handle very nicely. Next year I will be putting on some performance tires and I hope at that point that the car will be handling even better than it is now. We'll see how it performs at an auto-x event or two as well. Should be fun.

Looking forward to seeing how the car performs in the snow with the LSD now as well, it was fine last year, but you can always improve.

Sound like a great modification, especially for the RWD manual cars. What should one expect to pay? How can a used LSD me tested or function verified before install?

For a used T2 Torsen, I'd expect to pay in the $500-800 range, approximately. Unfortunately due to the design of the Torsen, it is very difficult to test before putting it in. However, as it has no normal wear items either (like clutch packs), there is not much that can be wrong with it. Unless you've got broken parts in there, it should still function about as well as when it was new.

The only suggestion I can make is to NOT run the factory-spec 2IS 75W85 Toyota LT gear oil, I had quite the chatter and gear noise from the LSD until swapping it out for regular 80W90 gear oil. Next time I change the fluid, I will probably use the Toyota LX gear oil (what the IS F uses with the Torsen LSD, and Toyota/Lexus transfer cases with Torsen LSD's). It's a 75W85 gear oil meant for use with the Torsen.
