IS300 Torsen LSD into IS250

Torsen LSD's are the original helical LSD. This is a Type 2 Torsen helical gear LSD.

The IS300 has either an open diff or a T2 Torsen LSD optional. The IS250 has a preload mechanism to help with low speed traction (like on snow), after that it basically acts like an open diff. I've never seen any information anywhere that references 2-piston calipers on the IS250, they all only have single pistons. The IS300 on the other hand did have 2-piston calipers.

Can somebody explain what I am getting for $1k here? How would this make the stock 350 different in plain English?

Simple give even power to the rear wheel so you get better traction. Most people dont need this for daily driven cars. Its great for the places where it snows or those who track there car. I had LSD on my ITR and M3 E46. It did wonder in the snow time for a rwd car.

It also affects cornering performance as well.

There is a lot of information on www.torsen.com related specifically to helical gear designs. Clutch and other designs will vary quite a bit in their application.

Comes in handy in general,. especially in snow conditions.

With open diff in know, one tire up in the air, you're almost out of luck by getting stuck as the wheel on the ground won't spin up. True locking diff, won't have that issue since the tire that's still on the ground will spin up.

With a proper LSD, the power is sent to the tire with the most traction helping acceleration, turning/cornering and well as tire wear. Its not just for racing.

Two-piston front calipers. 11.6-in ventilated front, 11.4-in solid rear discs.

Yeah Lexus.com's information is weird/off on a few issues. Not sure why that is.

As for why you'd want an LSD, it affects the way the car handles in more ways than just launching, etc. Superior handling (especially when tracking the car, but even just spirited driving through the mountains, etc.). It's not just for high powered cars either, there's a reason cars like the AE86 came with an optional LSD, as well as many other cars.

Torsen LSD is superior in almost all situations, that's why.

A couple of parts came in today, so I spent a bit more time cleaning up this diff before it goes in my car. Still waiting for 1 of the seals, the fill plug and the case cover bolts. I reused the old bolts to get it assembled today, I'll change them out when the new ones arrive. Why am I changing them? I don't know, I'm dumb; it's best not to ask why.

Cleaned, repainted housing, IS300 axle stubs removed (these are not reused for the IS250), seals removed:

Cleaned differential cover, type 1281 silicone sealant applied:

Cover installed, drain plug installed, new side seal installed, looking relatively decent now:

Just need the last few bits and it can go into the car. At this point it's basically just an R&R on the differential carrier now, as from the outside both diffs look essentially identical. It's the inside that counts though .
