Default Bass Restoration and JL 500/1 wiring and settings.

I've got a 2006 IS 350. A few years ago I installed a JL Audio 500/1 amplifier and a JL Audio 10w7 Pro Wedge. I used a JL Audio speaker wire to rca adapter to connect the car subwoofer audio signal to the amplifier. When I turn my volume up past about 45 I lose all bass. It seems to me the factory radio has a bass restriction causing the signal to fade out completly. Have any of you expirenced a similar problem? What have you done in attempt to correct the issue?

What settings do you have your 500/1 set at?

All suggestions appreciated.

Thanks!

I have the same setup, no problems here i usually ride around at around 55-58 and i cant see out of my rearview mirror... My car is NON- ML but has nav if that helps... i think someone tapped your line output converter in wrong or maybe its up too high, change the input switch on the amp from low voltage to high and see if it helps....

Pretty sure it doesn't. Sounds like you are overloading the JL input at 45 and its cutting out. A wiring problem/input signal compatibility problem? I know the JL amps can take a balanced/differential signal input, so that's probably not the cause, but maybe something similar?

If you're cranking your HU up that high then your signal is clipping pretty hard. I tested my non-ML/NAV outputs from the OEM amp with a scope and the signal starts clipping at about 53 on all the front channels.

The non-ML premium system does have dynamic eq'ing, so yes the the bass does fade out as the volume goes up. At about 40, is where it starts to drop off noticably. They do this so you don't damage the low quality factory drivers.

Aside from adding a high-buck signal processor, prolly the easiest cheapest way to counter this is to add an inline level control to your RCA inputs feeding the 500/1 so that you can adjust the bass volume as your listening level varies. JL makes a really nice one (CL-RLC) that is also a line driver, so it would give you a nice boosted input to your amp, allowing you to turn the gains down for cleaner power. PAC makes a cheap one (LC-1) that works pretty well too, although sometimes they aren't very linear in their level adjustment. Don't get the remote bass level control that plugs into the 500/1. That is really a bass boost control, not a level control, so it won't do anything to help the situation.

You could check your level settings on the LOC, but I doubt that's it, as long as they aren't up more than 3/4 to max. Those things usually don't put out anything near their claimed voltage output, unless you have a spendy high quality one.

I have the same setup with ml/navi and a 12w6. Preset on audio are at neutral. I can play it all day at 53 -55 without distortion. I had traffic jams do my setup.

whats your bass setting at? I keep mine flat (in the middle) on the head unit and i have mid and high all the way up. My gain on my amp (1200 watt rms ED nine.1) is set to less than 40% and bass boost is off completely.

You might be over heating or just causeing alot of clipping/distortion. Try adjusting the bass on the HU down first and then turning it up. Mine has never cut out and im pushing two JL 12W6v2s.

All mine are in the middle on the ml/navi unit. I have a bass boost controller from the amp. It seems to distort if i have the settings high. All in all im happy with it.

i was running 2 cerwin vega's with 2 rockford 500/1 amps running in my IS. running at roughly 1100 watts rms and the bass would slightly turn down at 45 but never clipped. my amps over heated once..but that was fixed with 8 small computer fans. 4 pushing air towards the amps and 4 pulling air away from the amps. it completely stopped after that

depends on what you run your HU at for bass / treble / midrange.
if you put the bass down a bit the stereo still sounds good at 50.

I added (2) 12 inch subs and it sounds really good.
still doing some tuning to the amp / RCA converter / Head unit.
find that sweet spot that'll make it sound even better.

on my Fly Audio I have the bass at the second dash. I control the JL Audio 750/1 with the remote bass now. That way I can adjust my JL 12W7 to what music I play. I turn up to 60 sometimes!!!
