Default Question for EX-BMW owners and current Lexus IS owners

I used to own a 94 BMW 325is and changed to my 08 IS350.

I was reminded why I do NOT miss the BMW Stealership recently when I took my wife's 325i in for service. The prices for service and parts are OUTRAGEOUS. The parts prices are about 50% higher than a typical parts house like BavAuto.

My question: What is it like at the LEXUS Dealership? I'm an avid DIYer and have only been into the Dealership for recalls. Is it the same routine pricewise, you know, bend over and grab your ankles? I realize they are a business and have to make a profit, but what is your gut feelings? What are the typical markups compared to parts places like Sewell or Carson Toyota?

I have a 2006 IS 350 and other than oil changes the maintenance has been nil so I can't definitively say if service prices are the same outrageous ones BMW gets. I have a hunch the answer is no.

My wife's RX 350 had a broken fog light and the only way to fix it was with a whole new unit....total cost was $330. That seems high but can't compare with anything else. She had her driver/passenger windows tinted this week at the Lexus dealer (two windows only since the rest of the vehicle comes from the factory already tinted) and they charged us $100 total, and that seemed very fair.

I never owned a BMW before but was planning on getting an E90 325i or 328i but went with the Lexus for many good reasons, mostly since I thought I found a nice deal on my IS350. I did do like a whole year of research on BMWs but bought a Lexus with no knowledge on the brand. Parts for both Lexus and BMW I'd say are the same. Dealers will charge way more than online sellers but OEM Lexus parts are just a bit cheaper compared to OEM BMW parts. However, more aftermarket parts are available for BMWs. Service costs are just about the same. BMWs use synthetic oils and a change costs $90, Lexus dealer I went to quoted me $60 for conventional and $90 for synthetic. But in general, Lexus cars won't be needing to visit the dealers as much as BMW's but both brands are costly IMO.

Stealership... Bend over... Sewell's prices are a good 20+% cheaper. For example: F-sport rear sway bar - dealer $225, Sewell $166.50 (after CL discount). Add in shipping (~$13) and its still a good $45 cheaper so right at 20% discount. If you can do it yourself, buy it from Sewell and skip the stealership.

Luxury brands always overcharge on servicing. It's pretty much part of having a luxury car, you gotta expect to pay crazy prices at the dealership when you take it in for service lol

I came from a Honda..

Lexus standard oil change = $65
Honda standard oil change = $28.88

It's the same thing, 6 qts of oil and a filter + labor, but gotta pay the cost to play

Just fyi,
I always buy mobile1 synthetic at costco onsale for around 23.99/6 quarts every year then buy oem filter onsale online or at dealer, and then take it to my local autoshop right at the corner ....they just charge me $7 buck service. I round it off make it 10$ tips. It about same thing for my other honda and benz when it come to that ez oil change

I had an E46 M3. A quart of oil was almost $20. The type of oil that you can only get from your dealer too.

for maintenance you can always take it to a toyota dealer and it should be a lot cheaper, not much do do for services besides oil and filter changes, occasional brakes, spark plugs, and fluids which all can be done in your garage..its a toyota it will last forever

i get full syn oil changes for 20 bucks filter included thanks to a friend who works at a caddy dealership

They don't put synthetic into Lexus? I doubt all Hondas do.

Just buy your parts from lextuners.com or Sewell and you'll be fine.

I had an E46 and I'm continually amazed at how much cheaper both OEM and aftermarket parts are for my new ISx50. It's like half the price for almost everything.

Your dealer ripped you off. I had and 02 M3 also and the quart from the dealer was $10 each were i got mine. This is no difference from me buying my Amsoil for $9 a quart for my IS350.
