I really hope Lexus does something special with the 3IS, to close the perceived drivability gap. When my lease is up 2014 I am hoping to score a 3IS-F
6HP doesn't define drivability though. Also, if you want to look at specs, the 335i is putting out better torque numbers than the IS350 at a much lower RPM. Either way, specs isn't everything. You don't get the spec numbers on the suspension though, which most will agree, stock for stock, 335i > IS350 in terms of handling. I've driven both, and as much as I love the IS line, I have to give it to BMW on that factor.

Thanks for this explanation, that makes it more clear to me than "more fun to drive". Suspension on IS can be augmented. Torque on the other hand..

The IS350 may not be racer fast but it's pretty darn quick. I mean 10 years ago an LS1 F-body was considered pretty darn quick for a stock car and it ran the same times stock.

Do you really want to get a 335i, add a chip, and blow up turbos?

In your case id go for the bmw. You already had a lexus so might as well change it up. Though I had the same decision to make and I chose the is350. I was coming from an audi and was tired of the maintenance disaster it was becoming, and the lexus imo looks much much better both on the interior and the exterior. The only downside is I really miss performance mods.

I'm not sure about the weight, but it feels quite a bit heavier than the 335i or my wife's 11 IS350C. I don't care about reliability after the warranty, as I don't keep cars that long. However, my wife does, so the IS350C should serve us well. I think MB has fixed a lot of the problems from years ago, or at least that's my perception with my car to date.

335i-fun car to drive. handled like it was on rails.
E350-solid and great cruising car. feels like you're in a tank (safety wise)
IS350C-great hardtop convertible. fun to drive with plenty of power. Interior is the best of all three.

I'm starting to look for my next car and am thinking that the Chevy Volt might be the ticket if the $7.5k tax credit is available next year. With my driving patterns, the only gas we would then be buying would be for the IS. Haven't driven one yet, so that might change once I drive it!
Hmmm interesting. You really think the IS had a better interior than an E class?

I like my Benz, don't get me wrong. But on the 2009's, the standard seats are leatherette (vinyl), not leather. I got the sport option, premium package 1 plus a couple other items and it price out at $57k. To get real leather, you had to get the Prem pkg #2 or 3 and that was another 4K (can't remember). Most dealers did not order this package. Since I got my car for a great price - $37k (no trade) in July 2009, I really can't complain. The car looks great and it is a great car (imho), I just think the 2011 IS350C interior is a little better, especially the heated and ventilated leather seats.

One other note is the MB Command system (audio/nav). A lot of people and reviews don't like it. I don't mind it, it's OK, but technology gets better and better with each new year.

335i is just a blast to drive, so good steering feel and strong and immediate response from the engine. IS350 is great, 335i is just greater in terms of sport car feel/trait. Long term reliability and interior design are the strongs of the Lexus, and there is no comparison in my opinion. BMW's interior(dashboard, tachometer and speedometer, center console, the buttons, the trims) are simply ugly. And I don't trust turbo engine too much. After a while, it might start to give you headaches. Since you had a IS250 for four years, just try something else, otherwise you might think you are still in your old car. But it is still your call, test drive both and decide.

I have the same feeling towards the new E-class. I prefer a white one. I would pick the new E-class over any other mid-luxury sedans in the market.

Default If it makes you feel good

At least you will feel good about your IS350 reliability when I smoke you with my tuned 335i making over 370+ horses and 400+ torque

BMW's interior may be simple, but it does not rattle.

I'll feel even better when I drive by you walking home from the dealership where you dropped off your car for repairs...

In all seriousness though, you're correct in pointing off a clear trade-off. In a 335, you can reach a level of performance unattainable in an IS350. However, a 335 is inherently more unreliable than a 350, and that's exacerbated by whatever engine tuning you do (which will also likely void the powertrain warranty standing between you and numerous expensive HPFP and other failures). It's a clear question of performance (and higher price, you must admit) vs. reliability. To each their own.

You're right - the 2IS has more than its fair share of rattles, and it's pretty embarrassing for a Lexus. But in the scheme of things, I'd take a 2IS with a rattle over a 335 with myriad other problems that actually affect operation and driveability.
