Default FOUND AND FIXED!!! Humming sound at ~40-45mph

Hello all,

Been searching around in multiple forums. Here's what i've got.

Humming very faint when accelerating, but most noticeable around the 40-45mph range.

So far i've done the following:

- New front rotors/pads
- New tires with 4 wheel alignment
- got wheel bearing checked and it was ok.

The hum is still there. I had a buddy of mine sit in the back and it appears to be comming from the rear end. Could the rear caliper pin TSIB issue cause this noise?

The noise is almost like an unbalanced tire but with no vibration.

Any suggestion is appreciated.

thanks,

-D

EDIT: Some details on the card:
I just picked up this 2006 IS250AWD on friday....
~68k miles

UPDATE: 05/23/2011
So after all new pads/rotors, new tires and wheel alignment. No go.
I took it back to the place i got tires and asked them to rebalance. The guy comes out and tells me
i had 3 bent wheels. Say what? How did they not catch it the first now. Now i'm stuck with new rubber on 17inch stock. So i will be looking for aftermarket 17 inch now, even though i was not going to do 17 inch if i went after market. Hopefully this is it with the hum.

thanks everyone with trying to help me figure this one out. I just assumed when i got new tires, when they go to mount/balance it that one thing to check for was for any bends in the wheel.

UPDATE: 06//02/2011
Ok...after new wheels. Still had issue. Finally got in touch with regional manager of tire discounters. Said to go to another location, i went there and they were able to hear the noise. Quick test found rear wheel bearing going out. So finally found the issue. Luckily i have 69,810 miles on my car and it's still under powertrain warranty. Lexus of Dublin took care of me, they went ahead and replaced both rear wheel bearings and i got the car back today and noise is gone. Great service and finally fixed!!!

Unfortunately I can't help with your question, but if it's about your 2001 IS300 then I think you're in the wrong forum - you're looking for IS- First Generation.

I thinks it is normal... does it happen when u accelerate around 40-45? or when you maintain speed at 40-45 or so.

very slight when accelerate or stopping (may just be in my head, who knows) but it is more noticeable when maintaining speeds of 40-45mph.

all i know is my old 01 and 02 is300 never had that noise. could it be the awd system? or maybe wheel bearing is bad, just not really bad yet.

Yokohama ENVigors. I've used them before in other cars and never had any road noise issues. Old tires were Nexen N5000 which i did not like at all, that's what previous owner had on there and why i got new tires.

that's my 2nd thought after getting new tires and alignment. i did ask them to check, but i'm sure all they did was the "shake" test which probably isn't the best test.

I am a tire guy.... but I can be wrong.

Sometimes the noise can come from the tires, and these noise problems can be hard to find.
-Separation tires (you can't tell by looking at it)
-Over or under inflation tires (35-38 psi is good)
-Cheap quality tires (China made, low-end Korea and Japanese tires also)

Take it to a local tire shop (old-school looking ones with good reputation) and ask them to test drive and look for it.

PM me if you want to know more, but I don't blog as often these days.

Will try to find a shop like that but tire pressure is at 36psi all around.

thanks for the tip

It is your tires.

Trust me, you would know if it is a bearing. It would be a horrible screeching sound.

I have new Hankook V12's, I get a hum even if they are warmed up. Has everything to do with the tread pattern.

ok...i was worried because i've had these tires before and never had this same type of hum. the tires on there before did the same thing, that's why i got new tires, thinking it would get rid of the hum.

guess just have to deal with it if it's nothing wrong.

thanks all,

-D

Also if it's wheel bearing, it could cause the car to have a pulsation like feeling as well.
