Default Buy tires/wheels locally or online?

To everyone that has bought wheels/tires. Do you buy locally or have you ordered online? Would you risk an online purchase just to save $200-400 dollars?

I've been reading some reviews for some of the online stores and some are really iffy. Reason I'm even considering online is because of the exchange rate to CDN$ (not so much this week) and it's less expensive to buy in the USA. (even if I have to drive across the border to pick up).

Any recommendations or comments?

Online at discounttiredirect.com. Free shipping and excellent customer service. Bought at least 5 whole set of tires from discounttire.

I have ordered from both tirerack and discounttiredirect and am satisfied with both. The only hassle with ordering online is if you have to return something (which I've done). But if you know what you're doing and research your selections properly, it shouldn't be an issue.

I ordered from tirerack, no issues with them. Don't have to pay taxes compared to buying local and the prices being slightly higher

I live in Canada and have ordered 2 sets of winter tires and 3 sets of summer tires through them. Really fast and great service. They also now include everything up front such as brokerage fees, taxes shipping etc.

I found what I wanted online, went to a local place and asked them if I ordered through them and had them do the install if there was any benefit... ended up getting 10% off

I think the key is differentiating between "legit" sites and "iffy" sites. Like those above, I've also ordered through Tirerack and had no issues, great transaction. If you're going to use a legitimate site like this, I'd highly recommend purchasing online for the ease of shopping and savings they offer. I would not recommend buying from a site you consider "iffy".

I got done tires from tirerack, and it was painless. I would never give my credit card info to any place or person that I would consider iffy.

i have always bought tires local and rims outside of CA to avoid taxes. both tire rack and discount direct have been more expensive when i quoted prices locally.

I prefer Discount Tire for all of my wheel/tire business...we've been good to me I guess. The key to buying in-person though is not to accept the price/offer that the computer spits out...it's not the best deal you can get. This is where your haggling skills come in.

Also, might I add that Discount Tire's "tire insurance" is a very good option to think about...especially if you have low-pro tires.

OK, here's what I do and it works EVERY time and this is the way I find I get THE BEST price on BRAND NEW tires, FIRST, I go to www.onlinetires.com or www.treaddepot.com and locate the tire size and brand that I'm looking for, SECOND, I verify that www.discounttiredirect.com carries that EXACT same tire in the size that I need and make sure that it's IN STOCK, THIRD, I contact discount tire direct to let them know that I've found the same tire at a lower price, they verify the validity of the website and pricing info and they will either MATCH THAT PRICE OR MORE THAN LIKELY THEY"LL BEAT IT!! I always use discount tire and they've ALWAYS BEAT the competition, and their service is SECOND TO NONE!!!!
