If I am purchasing a used 08 IS250 from a private party, can I purchase CPO warranty from Lexus? How much?

No you cannot. Why would Lexus warranty a car you didn't buy from a Lexus dealership?

Lexus CPO warranty only applies to cars that go through the Lexus CPO checks and then are sold at Lexus Dealers. You won't get a CPO Lexus anywhere but at a Lexus dealer.

Anyone who tells you they can get you a warranty on a car you buy privately is just taking your money. All those "used car warranty" programs are complete scams too by the way.

If you really want a warranty negotiate with a Lexus dealer on a CPO Lexus or find a private sale with factory warranty still left

Not entirely true. Everything and anything is possible for a price. You can take your second hand IS to a dealer and they can sell you the certification if it's a car they feel could qualify (age, condition, miles). They have the ability to take it under their wings, but it will cost you an arm and a leg. After my lease expired, they were willing to certify my car if I bought it back from them. The price was so bad, the manager laughed when telling me. He said, "you don't want to know."

But thats different isn't it? You owned the car before and it was a lease from a dealer you have a relationship with. It was probably going to be a CPO cause it was a lease - usually returned with low miles and the car was bought from that dealer. But buying it from a private seller (one that the dealer has no relationship with) and trying to get a CPO warranty on it isn't going to happen i'd imagine - not unless you were doing something nuts like selling them the car, letting them certify it and then buying it back...lol

True. I did lease the car first and have a record with Lexus. But the dealer I tried certifying it with was not the dealer I bought it from. But I have a good feeling any Lexus dealer would have had the same high rate for CPO-ing it. They just don't want to deal with it unless you make it worth their while. I heard anything from $1500-2500 PLUS whatever repairs are needed to bring it up to CPO standards. That would involve tires, brakes, etc. The gyst of it is similar to how Carmax works. They will buy anyone's car, but they aren't going to give you much for it. Lexus will take in whatever you want to give them, but you aren't going to get jack for it either. Or if you want special services from them (CPO), they will cook you for it.

bear in mind if the car is still within factory warranty (4 yr/50k miles) you can always buy the factory extended warranty... no need to worry about CPO or not.

Well with the money you'd pay out for a warranty, you could just save it. I doubt you'll ever run into a repair that expensive with your IS as long as its been maintained properly.
