Default How to change battery in remote?

I got a low key battery warning today. Will the dealer do it for me? How much do they charge? Or is it easy enough to do it myself?

Don't pay the dealer to do it. Take the valet key out, pop the fob apart. There will be a small computer chip with the battery attached, remove and replace.

Only place I could find the battery was Toyota or Lexus. Paid about $7

Some dealers do this for free. Others charge you $20 for the $1 battery then throw in the "labor" for free.

It takes about 90 seconds to do yourself though.

Take out the mechanical key, turn it 90 degrees and where you removed it from there's a sorta-obvious place to put it in, then twist it, and the front/back of the remote will pop apart.

remove old battery, insert new one, snap the two halves back together, put mechanical key back normally, done.

You can often find the battery locally, but if not it's available online very cheaply.

If you are looking for a battery somewhere else it is a 1632 battery.

Thanks everyone, bought some batteries online and will try to change it when they come. How long do I have before the battery dies? I'm assuming they put the low key battery warning light on fairly early, I'd hate to get stranded somewhere.

It's impossible to get stranded. The fob and key still work with the battery dead, just not at range.

I got my battery at Radioshack. I think it was $3.
