Sorry for the failure to post the promised updated pics. Ran out of time before the Super Bowl (huge disappointment), and was in no condition to post anything afterwards..... Downloading pics now, and will have them up in the next little bit.

First two pics are of the rear mount dash kit secured to the cd changer faceplate with epoxy. I just used a small bead, so that it would hold it in place, but couldn't risk getting any on the HU...

Placed some of the filler behind the faceplate for added strength. This will get a second application later, and I will likely coat it with resin before I am done.

Lastly, I did just a little bit of sanding, and placed the Kenwood in the faceplate to see how it was looking. I am still going to have to use more filler, then smooth out some of the rougher surfaces with putty. Not to mention tons of sanding before it's ready to paint. Anyway, here are a few pics of what it will look like.

Okay, I got a little bit more done today, and will be doing more tomorrow afternoon after work. I am a little surprised I didn't get any love or hate after the last post and round of pics. . . . . Second application of fiberglass filler went on today. Lots of sanding to do tomorrow, and I plan to go ahead with the glazing putty to smooth out the imperfections. From there, it will lots and lots of sanding.
As for the color match, I went to Car Quest Paints (also known as NCS), and the guy there said he should be able to match it in a plastic/vinyl paint. Using that type of paint instead of regular, because it is available in different levels of gloss. The trim isn't a high gloss finish, and that would be as bad of a mis-match as the wrong color. The color match paint will cost me $60 for a half a pint (more than enough to do the changer), but better be spot on for that price. Will try to post up more pics tomorrow, definitely Sunday if not.

now, just one question. how are you going to hook up HU?

I have schematics, and will be wire tapping for power and acc. The ground will be run to the frame. The antenna is the same, so that's not an issue. I will have 6 channels of interconnects running to my Hertz amp, which will take car of the signal. The hardest part will be tucking the factory CD changer assy in the back of the dash. I have to retain that portion of the unit for the factory head unit's display, and HVAC controls. I have already test fitted the modded cd changer to the upper assy, and it fits nicely. The actual install, I can figure out. The mod to the faceplate and final finish and color match really are the hardest parts of this type of install.

Okay, here are a few pics of the progress. Got the last coat of fiberglass filler applied, and added an application to the back for extra strength. Last few pics are of the modded cd changer faceplate snapped into the junkyard HU assembly for an idea of what it will look like. As I said on the last post, still lots of sanding and finish work to go, but I like how it's looking so far. The mount hole is really clean. I will make sure to have the Kenwood HU in for the next set of pics tomorrow......

When you're done, get a mold made of it.

I appreciate all the work you've put into this, but I suspect a LOT of folks would appreciate a PnP solution and I suspect a good looking dash kit would sell like crazy for the 2IS.

I doubt anyone would offer this as a kit, because of the fact that the factory changer assy has to be retained and tucked back in the dash or relocated to the glove box. Without it, the HVAC and display controls don't work. The horrid kit that I originally posted in this thread goes above the HU, and doesn't interfere with the changer at all. Believe it or not, it never occurred to me to make a mold. That is a great idea! On my 3rd round of sanding now. It really looks a lot better than I thought it would at this point.

Updated pics with a coat of primer on the faceplate and a test fit with the HU in it. Looking good! A little tight in the bottom corners, so I will have to remove a little bit more material there. Otherwise, I am quite happy with it. Just a little more finish sanding to do, and I think I need to go Wednesday and get my paint. Should be spraying it in the next few days. Got to do the Valentine's thing tonite, so won't get anything done until tomorrow........
