Default How low can you go on fuel tank?

Hi,

Just curious, where exactly would be the critical point where you would need to fill up or the car would stop.

So far I'm trying to gauge how far I can go on a tank of gas on my IS250 AWD. So far I had gottne 396 miles, a wii short of my goal to hit 400 as the needle is right on the final line at E, with 0 approx on the range.

When the vehicle is off, the needle all the way the left passed E with a gap. The question is, the gap, can it be assumed that means there is still gas within the tank even thou it is passed the final line of E?

Thanks

I can answer B). If I am travelling and cannot find any gas stations along a route and trying to find a station. Of course, I should fill it up before then but lets assume worst case.

Comming from a 1999 Solara, I could get about 400 Miles on it as well, considering it is a 18 gallon tank. Hoping to pull it off with the IS, to see how much more fuel efficent it is compared to the previous vehicle I had travelling the same approximate distance.

Before that, I had a 1995 Corolla and managed to pull off 500 KM. Only did that one and never did that again since it was too risky, then just did back 400 KM on this vehicle.

I found people discussing that here as well:

http://my.is/forums/f87/is250-tank-c...isplay-312802/

People seem to think there's about 2 gallons left or a 10% reserve. I myself have never tested this and don't really intend to but if you do, let us know how much further you were able to travel!

Once it hit 0, I believe I drove about 30miles more before my car ran out of gas and died.

^This sounds about right. I've driven around for a good 20~ miles before with the 0 on estimation. It didn't die on me. So I'm guessing it can take a little bit more than 20.

awwwwww! Did you have a spare tank of gas in the trunk or you have to get it towed!??
------------------

On the side, if you let the car die from letting it get to empty, I heard that is not good for the car. True?

Oh luckily it was when I was while I was warming up the car. I drove 20-30miles then went home and was planning to pump the next day. Gas station only 2miles away so I figured I'd last there but I guess I drove more then what I really had left since it doesn't show how much gas left you have to drive.

30 miles more on an IS350 sounds about right.

I've done this experiment countless times on my IS350, and the results are extremely consistent.

When I run my car down to 0 miles, I always end up filling up the gas tank to (fuel capacity - 2 gallons).

The fuel tank capacity in the IS350 is 17.1 gallons. At "range = 0 miles," I always fill up to 15.1 gallons (it varies ever so slightly from 15.08x to 15.09x).

This means that there's a reserve of 2 gallons of gas after the range hits "0 miles."

At approximately 20 miles per gallon, theoretically you could go an extra 40 miles but that would be madness. I'd imagine you could safely go 20 to 25 miles.

You can safely go another 20-25 miles if you wanted to. I wouldn't recommend it as the fuel pump likes to have, well fuel! lol. I've gone maybe 15-20 miles max after the 0 with no problems.

By the way, the results have been so consistently close to "2 gallons" (1.995 gallons, 1.992 gallons, so on and so forth) that it leads me to believe that this is by design. Lexus wanted the car to have 2 gallons in reserve after the range hit 0.

This applies to IS350s.
