Default Painting Brake Calipers

Im going to change out my brake pads and rotors some time next week and i was thinking of doing a lil mod in the process.

I wanted to know what i have to do to paint my calipers. I know its simple painting but what are the steps involved. What do i have to cover to and leave open. WHat type of paint is involved and how many coats, will a clear coat be needed?

I would appreciate if somone could help out

I recommend using the G2 caliper paint. You can find it at most Autozone's or here http://g2usa.com/ It comes with everything you need to paint you calipers in any color you want. A DIY is on their site. No need for a clear coat with their system. GL

No need to take off the calipers regardless of brush-on or spray paint but with spray it's just a lot more masking to do.

+1 for G2. Make sure to get a caliper decal while you're at it. I got mine from http://www.motogfx.com/lexus/.

Steps:
1. Put your car on jack stands and remove your wheels (be careful, make sure that car is firmly planted).
2. Clean your calipers THOROUGHLY with a wire brush and drench them in brake cleaner (I went through 2 cans, to be sure). Prep is everything. Don't get that brake cleaner on your paint though.
3. Paint the calipers - 1 coat, wait 15 min then 2nd coat. Let it dry for 24 hours.
4. Put the caliper decal on
5. Done

You can paint the calipers while they're on the car. Just mask it off well.

I second that.

I'm also planning to paint my calipers blue or gold.

The kit has a spray cleaner. So use the spray cleaner to clean the calipers. After cleaning, then mask off the areas that shouldn't be painted.

Then mix the solution with paint to activate it. Use the brush to paint the calipers.

It's pretty straight forward. The only hard part is jacking up the car.

What's in the kit is probably enough, I just like to be sure.

Paint everything that you can see. The front obviously, and the sides all the way back. You don't need to paint the back because you don't see it, and it's hard to get to anyway.

I don't know how dirty your calipers are... I know for mine, just one can with the kit is good. My car is only one month old.

Just paint the outer calipers. If you want to paint inside, then you will have to dissemble calipers and remove brake pads. Too much work for just cosmetics to me.

As for the Lexus decals everyone has on... where are you guys buying them? Wouldn't they melt from the temperature?

Just ordered the Kit and the Lexus decals from motogfx.

Also the rear Calipers are painted as well right, i didnt know since they are lil smaller then the fronts and did you guys apply the decals there as well?

See post #5. The part of the caliper they are on doesn't get that hot, certainly not hot enough to melt the decal.

Paint the rears to match, but no decal would look good because they are so small.
