Default Dealer charging $450 for spark plug replacement!! Screw it, doing it on my own.

So I called my dealer to schedule and appt to replace my spark plugs and a couple of other things. Rep quoted me around $240 to replace. I was willing to pay that so I scheduled the appt. When I get there on Sat they tell me it was a mistake and that the correct price is $450!

I declined the service and I'm thinking of taking this on myself. I've always worked (brakes, spark plugs, etc.) on my old cars so I have some experience. I know the IS is not the same as my old cars, but I'm willing to give it a try.

Any help, tips, DIY's you guys can give me will be greatly appreciated. I've read several threads; some saying you have to take off the manifold while others say you don't. Anyone know what the real deal is?

you can also just buy some NGK plugs and take it to a local respectable shop for much cheaper then the dealer.

there is currently no real DIY yet, only a makeshift one for a 250. If you have a 350, then you'll probably have to do it on your own. A few members do have complete DIY but have yet to upload it, probably because they havent had time to do a complete write-up yet

This is the route I went. Spent about $90 for all 6 plugs, then another $95 on labor to have them put in.

I have a 250 with about 62k miles. I did see the makeshift DIY thread for the 250, but unfortunately it lacks detail. I guess its a good start though. I just wanted to make sure I didn't do any extra work that was not necessary.

I did think about buying the plugs and having a local shop do it, but I don't know of any reputable local shop. Its so hard to find an honest shop that you can trust. Unless you guys know of any in the San Gabriel Valley area.

What's wrong with the OEM plugs? Can't I just use those?

I got the stock plugs for $80 and did it myself in like 1 1/2 hr. Very easy job. The stock plugs are a three prong. I just hit 59k and after the job I noticed the engine run smoother. I didnt like the aftermarket plugs.

Quick Reply: Dealer charging $450 for spark plug replacement!! Screw it, doing it on my own.
