Question Windshield is athermic/heat-reflective?

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone could tell me if the windshield on our 2nd gen IS is athermic/heat-reflective/solar-shielded etc? It's basically a very thin layer of metallic content that is laminated into the center of the windshield.

The reason I'm asking is because I see deteriorated performance from my radar detector. I called and asked the dealership today and of course they didn't know. They came back a while later and said that they thought yes it might be athermic.

More details here in case anyone is interested: http://www.radardetector.net/forums/...icle-list.html

Thanks.

Just in case it makes a difference across model years, mine is an '07 IS350.

The OEM windshield does come with a 78% tint. Having said that, I have a V1 mounted in my car and have tremendous range. There are tons of others here running many different radar detectors, and there's no issues with range that I'm aware of.

Thanks. I'm aware of the tint but unsure about the athermic layer. Lexus said they think it's there but they weren't positive. I guess I'll try and ask someone else from the other dealerships till I can get a conclusive answer.

Thanks anyway.

It is NOT athermic. Athermic is usually copper or light brown colored. Most athermic windshields will have a "window" for radar detectors, next to the mirror. You can tell by shining a flashlight through the windshield and the little window will show up. It's easier to do in the dark from inside the car. Most athermic windshields will have a little window to the left and right of the mirror.

Again, Lexus does NOT have athermic windshields.

I'm jealous of those who can run radar detectors. VA sucks.

THANK YOU!! I did some tests too and I'm positive that you're in fact right. Thanks again!

OEM windshields for the IS350 are already $1,200...shudder to think what they would cost if they were athermic. I think CA will require this before too long, which will drive up the cost of all cars, as they won't spec these windshields for only one state. That, and many states usually follow the lead of the wackos in CA.

(proof that they're wackos: trying to ban black cars)
