auto-dimming mirrors
Hi Guys,
Quick question re auto-dimming mirrors, how hard are they to wire into a IS that didnt come with them?
It's the only feature that I think is really missing from the base IS series, and considering the inside mirror dims I dont understand why they didnt do this to the outside mirrors...probably costs..
Thanks,

I have auto dimming side mirrors but they may have come with the luxury pkg. Also I do not think they are electric, they do not have a sensor like the rear view. They seem to be light sensitive and just tint. They definitely work differently then the rear view.

My window sticker and the Lexus website both say "Electrochromic (auto-dimming) outside mirrors with auto tilt-down in reverse". Electrochromatic would certainly imply that they are electric. My guess is that they use the same sensor as the inside rearview mirror.

I dont really understand the comments made above. To clarify my question; does anyone know if additional wiring is required to have the auto dimming side view mirrors installed on an IS that was not equipped with this feature?

The only electric attached to the mirror is for heating. When the side mirrors tint they seem to be triggered differently from the RV mirror. More like those sun glasses that tint. I could be wrong but something is different!

I disagree... I belive they are directly linked to the rear view mirror, and I also think they use the same sensor as the rear view mirror as well. When you press the auto button on the rear view mirror to disable the auto-dimming, the side mirrors' auto-dimming also turn off.

Does anyone know about this 'additional' wiring that must be connected to the rear view mirror...that way I can connect it to the side view mirrors wiring?

The side mirrors are linked to the rear view mirror...I was playing with at night get a flash light and aim it at the sensor in the rear view mirror, the side mirrors also dim with the rear view mirror...I think you might have to have side mirrors that dim and the wiring to the sensor.
