Default 30K service confusion

I got a reminder in the mail today regarding time for my 30,000 service. The reminder mentioned that the service included replacing coolant, brake fluid, and automatic transmission fluid (as well as several other minor items)

I checked the owner's manual and it only lists the brake fluid as a 'change' but the coolant and transmission fluid as a 'check'. Also several other minor items.

So..is 30K a change or replace for the tranny fluid and coolant?

The dealer is trying to rip you off. Do not change the coolant or trans fluid.

It's not even physically possible to change the transmission fluid.

The owners manual explicitly states the transmission is a lifetime unit and doesn't require fluid changes, ever.

Find a more honest dealer if possible.

Also, if you must use a dealer, never go in for an X miles service appointment. Ask specifically for the pricing for the exact things the vehicle needs, and that's it. If you ask for the X miles service they'll jack the bill way up without doing anything you really require.

What you actually need to do on a 2IS:

Every 5k: change the oil (assuming you want to follow factory recommendations and aren't using synthetic or anything)

Every 15k: Change engine/cabin filters (you can do each yourself in about 5 minutes for cheap)

Every 30k: Change brake fluid

Every 60k: Change spark plugs

Every 100k: Change coolant.

That's it.

To me it's pretty short actually...I'm used to 100k spark plugs as the factory change interval.

Yah, 100k is the norm on newer vehicles.

They tried to pull that crap on me as well at the 30k tuneup. Total BS. They said, well it's recommened since most Lexus owerns with 30k miles on their car are 3-4 years old, not 10 months old like yourself.

The brake fluid was changed with the recall, so I had them do an oil change and I did the filters myself. At 60k I had them change the coolant and stick-shift tranny fluid. They did a free inspection.

^^you jacked yourself. Toyota long life coolant (what we have) is good to 120k miles. It needs to be for what it costs.

They replaced your brake fluid for the brake dust TSIB? Or are you talking about some other recall? Because I'm pretty sure they did not replace my brake fluid for that TSIB... Although I guess every dealer is different. I've heard that some of them even replace the rotors.

I have the same question, anyone know if either of the brake related TSIBs from January or so would have required a brake fluid change? I'm at 30k and want to schedule my service but wanted to know ahead of time what I need. My dealership is pretty cool for the most part, but I can only assume they will attempt to rack up a nice invoice for themselves.

They do the inspection regardless of whether you get an oil change or major service.
