Waste of time and money. You can safely go 10K miles.

I've had great results with Amsoil 0w-30. I installed a oil bypass system on my V8 4Runner. I've been using this oil now for 4 years (Never changed) with 40K miles on it and my last UOA shows no end in sight yet. Usually 0w oils have the best additive packages and are the highest quality (For street use) oil each manufacture makes. You can’t go wrong with ANY 0w oil.

So if I live in a SoCal climate (80F all year), I can still use 0W vs 5W ? I thought 0W is for colder climates.

Does the OEM filter last 10K miles? I sure don't want to exceed that but I do run Mobil1 5W30 currently and I plan to switch to Mobil1 0W30. I run about 6000 miles in between but always unsure of the filter efficiency after 6K miles. But it does make me sleep better being in Houston 100+ degree heat..

So what's your point of switching to 0W vs using 5W?

Again, up to 80% of engine wear is from cold starts. This does not only pertain to cold weather. Cold start means the first start of the day after the engine has completely cooled/drained down. This wear accrues in the time the oil takes to get to the vital parts of the engine (bearings, cams, lifters, etc). The quicker the oil gets to those vital areas the less wear. That being said, the lower the weight the better/faster the oil will flow during start-up. The IS, along with most modern engines are using 5w-20. The “w” represents winter and is the important number to look at when determining cold start flow. The lower the number the better cold flow.

0w-30, 5w-30, 10w-30, all will provide approx the same protection against thermal breakdown, being that they all have the 30 weight rating. The difference is in the pour rate (ability to flow when cold). The lower the "w" (Winter) rating/viscosity the better flow at start up. The best viscosity to use is the lowest viscosity that falls within the OEM recommended range. Petro based oil is affected more by the "w" rating, that's why you see the graph in the owner's manual with several different viscosities. In reality, a 0w-30 quality synthetic oil will cover that whole range in the owner's manual.

The OEM filter has proven to still provide safe protection past 10K miles. My last UOA (Used oil analysis) had 12K miles on the OEM filter and it was fine. I'm not sure where the myth started that an oil filter only lasts for the OEM recommend change interval but there is no need to change it that often. Years ago the OEM recommended the filter only needed to be changed every OTHER oil change. There is no reason to guess at how long the oil or filter will last, you simply can send a sample of the oil at 8K miles and you know for sure how long you can safely use the oil and filter. The factory fill (petroleum based oil with break-in debris) is still safe after 10K miles.

^^ FYI Koz...

Every IS Model, including the IS-F comes with regular 5w30 oil from the factory in Japan..

It's printed on the Oil Cap and in the Manual..
This includes the newest IS-F's and the 2010 IS-C's..

To the OP: there is NO new "oil use suggestion" from Lexus and/or Toyota.

On a side note, I change my oil every 5K miles with regular Mobile Clean 5K Oil..
(non synthetic)

Joe Z

Wasn't 5w-20 recommended until MY 2008? I think because Koz has an '07 that may be why he mentioned 5w-20 as being recommended; that is probably on his oil cap and owner's manual...?

Anyway, to the OP, the climate in So. Cal. isn't so extreme (in most cases) to necessitate a synthetic oil or a 0w-30. I think many people here, myself included, just want to use what has been shown to be better alternatives. Also, if we can safely squeeze a little more mileage out of our oil and decrease oil change frequencies then few here would object to doing so.

Nope, that never happened..
(it was a short interval on some MY 2006 Lexus/Toyota Engines)

and

Nope, neither the caps or manuals have ever had 5w20 printed on/in them...

That's a Fact..

Change my oil and filter every 5K with Mobil 1 5w-30 or 0w-30. I don't know if it’s me but before I had the start up TSIB done, with the 0w-30 oil, rarely hear the rattle.

Quick Reply: Oil Change - 5w-20 or 5w-30? What everyone is using?
