ELL_Y pretty much explained it. But yes, the return wire should be on it's side like that. Where the glass of the bulb is facing forward (towards the projector lens). And the wire will be facing the rear of the car anyways.
That's weird because the return wire on mine is pointed up yet the bulb is properly fitted in with the tabs and stuff aligned. Maybe I have to take a look at it again but from what I remember it's up

i'll recheck that, but I'm pretty sure the bulb is suppose to face like that.

I did exactly that though haha. nice write up. I thought I could change the passenger side bulb without moving the airbox. NO way!
Awesome info. I was going to have to replace my driver side HID this weekend as my car's warranty just lapsed but the dealer took care of it gratis as "goodwill." I was very happy
