HID/AFS stand alone option, installation?
what does the installation entail when getting the oem hid/afs stand alone option? do they replace the entire headlight? do they have to pull the dash or anything like that to program the afs on/off?

i was reading other posts regarding the hid/afs as a stand alone option. i couldn't find anything on what the installation was like, but if that's not the case then oem hid/afs as a stand alone doesn't exist?

Significant challenges exist to have the AFS option work correctly on a non hid-equipped car, and is likely out of the scope of a DIY task. As far as I know, nobody has successfully gotten the AFS to work.

Stand alone option means it can be ordered without any other packages when ordering a new car.
It has nothing to do with being able to add it after the car has been built.
HIDs are a stand alone option because you can add them to a car that hasn't been built yet, without having to buy any other options.
Your local dealer can't add them after the fact though.

1) IS HID/AFS a stand alone option? Technically, yes:
Bi-Xenon™ High-Intensity Discharge (HID) headlamps and Adaptive Front Lighting System (AFS) $875 [3]

2) What's involved in installing them? The same thing that's involved when the install the halogens. It's a factory option--they don't retrofit the car. When the car is built, it's built with the HIDs and AFS, rather than halogens. It's like asking what's involved in installing the 3.5L engine if you opt for 350 instead of a 250.
"Standalone" does not mean "Dealer installed."

There's 2 different concepts going on here:
1) IS HID/AFS a stand alone option? Technically, yes:
But--it's pretty hard to find one that isn't "packaged" with HID/AFS.
