Default Defective rear view mirror 2006 IS 250

I have a Lexus 2006 IS. The inside rearview mirror has started to get black spots and lines and the replacement cost is $825. I believe that it is defective ,but the dealership does not agree. Has anyone else had this problem ?

Out of curiosity, what does the dealership claim is the case, if not that it's defective?

I've seen this brought up a few times here on CL, here's one thread: https://www.clublexus.com/forums/is-...tern-wear.html

Does your car have an extended VSA warranty or is it CPO? If so, then the dealership should fix it immediately, no questions asked. It's a clear case of pattern wear. If you're not in warranty, then unfortunately I don't think you have any recourse here. Even if the dealership ends up agreeing that it's defective (which it is), they're not bound to do anything about it because you're out of warranty. Unless you have a great relationship with the dealership and they'll do it goodwill, this will be out of pocket for you.

You do have other options though. I wouldn't pay $825 for this. I would call up some Lexus junkyards and get quotes on a rearview mirror. I did this a few times on my LS400. There are a few Lexus junkyards out there, and a few non-Lexus-specific places that collect junked or totaled cars and then part them out. If I were you I'd just buy a used one from one of these.

Lexus uses GenTex mirrors.

I'm sure you can find an online supplier - Like this:

ebay is your friend in this case. No reason to buy a brand new mirror from anywhere..especially to buy 825! Thats ridiculous for a mirror replacement. Used or new its the same. Well atleast in decent condition.

I've had these black spots on my 2006 IS ever since I bought it (in '09). It's so ugly to say the least... time to visit the junkyard.

In no way is EBay your friend here. You're looking at used mirrors for far more money than a brand new GenTex mirror. As I said, Lexus and other manufacturer's use GenTex. I don't see an issue here

And, Lexus had a TSB to replace the mirror's listed in the above two EBay adds. Those mirrors vibrated. I had the TSB done and the new mirror was a GenTex Like this one:

This mirror is used on all IS models from 2009 on.

What caused the mirror vibration/when would it occur? I ask because I notice my rearview mirror vibrates significantly when playing music at even a normal volume. Hasn't really bothered me too much, but if there's an updated part I'd love to get it. My car's CPO, has anyone had this replaced under the CPO warranty? I have no reason to believe it wouldn't be covered, just curious.

Bingo, also when the moon roof was open. The new one vibrates much less, however, I must admit I sort of liked the home link buttons on the bottom of the mirror rather than the front where they are now.

Last week, the dealer replaced my rear view mirror due to safety concerns caused by blind spots from the black pattern across the mirror. I have a CPO and thankfully had purchased the platinum extended warranty. For my 06 GS300, the mirror cost with labor was a whopping 1352.00. Really glad I had that extended warranty!

I have this problem on my 06 IS as well. Unfortunately, I'm out of warranty at this point, so I'm probably just going to wait until it becomes totally unbearable before I do anything about it.
