with this shortage of gas it is hard to find gas around Charlotte, and if u do there are long lines that extend on to the streets. its even harder to find premium gas or even mid grade for that matter..
today i waited for about 20 min for gas to drive up to the pump and see..."out"..stickers on the premium and mid grade....so having no choice i filled up with regular (i had a quarter tank of premium already in the car)...not that this can be undone but will it hurt my car if i use regular a few more times or just when premium is unavailable during this shortage?

Well, try to drive as little as possible, From the Owners manual, it sounds like using Regular would be horrible for an IS250(because of the high compression)

Octane booster is crap... when it says it adds 8 "points" of octane it doesn't mention a "point" of 0.1

So it'll turn 87 into 87.8 octane.

You can make your own that actually does something, but it involves handling some nasty chemicals.


Overall, you aren't likely to destroy your engine with a tank of 87, the ECU should retard timing as soon as it sees the engine knocking and keep doing so each time it detects it, minimizing harm, but it's not a good idea if you can possibly avoid using it.

Kinda weird you have gas lines... I've just a couple hours away in the Raleigh area and have had no issue finding gasoline.

Kurtz you just jinxted us! Go to a performance shop and buy 5 gallons of 100 octane. Drive your car to it hits 3/4 tank and add the 100 octane until full. You should be at 93 octane by mixing the two.

so there isn't much i need to worry about as far as damage to the engine is there...i plan on filling up premium every time i find it..to try to bring the octane level up...i did have a quarter tank of premium before i added about half tank of regular....
but yea...its not to easy to gas around here...not every station has it...and as soon as a tanker pulls up to fill up the stations...so do the cars, and line up usually spilling on to the streets...
i just saw on the news that they are urging those that have more than a half tank of gas not to rush to the station....

i hope this mess ends soon...

Well 88.6 Octane(after two bottles) is better than 87 octane.

According to the manual it sounds like disaster if you use 87 octane. It says to tow it to the dealership and drain the gas. Those are pretty strong words.

Easy fix. Go to Lowe's or Home Depot. Buy a 5 gallon can of toluene or xylene. Pour in 2.5 gallons. Fill with regular. Problem solved. Your mix will be 90.9 octane which meets the minimum 91 octane required for the ISx50.

You mean gasoline isn't poisonous? Come on here guys, your gasoline can contain up to 45% aromatics and still be US legal. Toluene and Xylene are both aromatics and are both extensively used in unleaded gasoline to boost octane. You're just doing what didn't get done at the refinery.

And yeah, don't get it on your paint. But don't get gasoline on your paint either!

thanks for the input guys...i drove around for a bit today...and all i noticed a loss of power..(but i wasnt flooring like i always do)...and the engine sounded a tad different...going out of town (using the RX)so will fill up with premium when i get back...hopefully i can find it then...

i know there are other charlotte members on here...where are u getting ur gas??

getting anything under 91 would not be good for the car considered the engine has a high compression rate, not to mention your mpg will go down too
