Having emailed sewell lexus about this, they told me that:

"...however, please note that the reason that we have provided this filter to you is that Lexus has recently released a TSB on the carbon filters due to a musty smell related directly to the air filter. They have solved this problem by manufacturing the 87139-YZZ08 filter. "

Anyone getting that? I might keep the crappy paper element filter because I was having some bad musky odours before I changed it

The TSIB is L-SB-0031-08 dated June 3, 2008. It specifies part number 87139-07010 as the replacement. Not the crappy YZZ part.

Lol
The rep concludes that

I hope the filter change fixes my musty smell. I take my car to a toyota dealer for the minor service and they tried to sell me a $149 service to clean my A/C.

We buy the Filtrete advanced Allergen Filter by 3M, we buy a 20" by 20" for $18.00 and cut it into 4 filters, works great.

I have spent 2 hours or more looking for the correct OEM cabin air filter for 2006 Lexus GS 300. I ended up calling to local Lexus dealership parts department and got the same part number that my 2+ hour research yielded: 87139-07010. The part was in their stock, and the price was $42.95 + tax.

I googled this part number and stumbled upon an online store that sells Toyota OEM parts. They had part number 87139-07010 listed there for $26.00 plus shipping. I almost bought it from them, but then decided to call and make sure. I was told by their rep that part# 87139-07010 was superseded by 87139-YZZ08, and if I placed an order for 87139-07010 on their web site, they woul ship me 87139-YZZ08. At that point, I decided to go ahead and get the part from the Lexus dealer. I would have probably saved $10.00 if I purchased 87139-YZZ08 on line, but it would have taken about a week to get the filter, and I would not have known for sure if this was the correct part for my 2006 Lexus GS 300. From the post that I am quoting here, it appears that the 87139-07010 and the 87139-YZZ08 parts are actually different filters. There's no telling unless you get them both and compare them side by side. I don't think that wasting nearly 3 hours on this research was worth a potential saving of $10, especially since I did not get the YZZ08 part. I could not find the 87139-07010 for sale anywhere on the web.

I don't know how much the dealer charges for installing the cabin air filiter, but it took me 5 minutes or less to replace mine, including cleaning the plastic holding frame, which was filthy too.

So, lets get clear:

87139-30040 - was old cabin filter with carbon (charcoal) with musty smell, then they changed it to 87139-07010 without carbon, and now they changed it to cheapest (its half price of previous ones) 87139-YZZ08. Am I right?

Is there any non-oem carbon filters that will fit IS-2?

You guys are getting a musty smell 'cause you don't know how to use your A/C. Turn off the A/C button about 3-4 mins from your destination and just let your blower motor continue running through the vents. Live with the heat for that 3-4 mins and when u get back in you won't have that initial pungent smell when u turn it back on. If you really want to get into it, spray some deodorizer called OZIUM onto the a/c combination filter and that helps to rectify that moldy smell too.

My local toyota part supplier has these numbers:

87139-02020
87139-30040

Which one has activated charcoal?

87139-30040

doesn't seem to be available anymore where I am. 87139-07010 is the one that replaced it. I can not find that OEM charcoal one anywhere. The only time i'v seen it is on brand new Lexus and Toyota cars.
