It's actually 1000 kilometers, or about 650 miles, according to the manual.

However, there is huge debate on proper break-in. You'll find people answer in many ways.

Please use the "Search" function. You'll find many threads regarding this matter.

TO ALL MEMBERS: this is a poll, not a debate. I will close this thread if it gets out of hand...

I kept it easy till 700 miles. Never exceeded 4500rpm or went WOT.

After that I went WOT and redlined from gears 1-3 or 4.

I went with what the manual says, around 625 miles. Now I'm having fun.

I picked up my car about 2 weeks ago. I had to drive at 86miles on a freeway to come back home from dealer! So, now I have about 370miles! I've gone upto ~4800RPM-5000RPM. Haven't "Redlined" it yet!

Here's my procedure.
First 200 miles I went real easy on it, never passing 4000RPM's and only going that high a couple of times. 200-500 miles went easy on it but increased frequency of going to around 4000RPM. 500-600 miles hit 5000RPM a couple of times. At 620 miles WOT!

...I think I made it about 3 miles from the dealership before I first broke the tires loose and almost wrapped the car around a fire hydrant...

It's tempting to Redline it, everytime I get in....

I broke the engine staying at lower RPM's (under 4,500) for the first 500 miles. BUT, I accelerated and slowed down A LOT and let the engine slow the car down from 4,500 without using the brakes. I did the same for the next 100 miles up to about 5,500 RPM and am now WOT happy... This procedure helps seal the piston rings as this is really the only thing you are doing during "break-in".

It would appear there is a great deal about break-in you do not understand. Rings are 98% done in the first 10 minutes of operation, especially with many modern engines having a cylinder wall finish completed with 600 grit stones.

The most important thing you are doing during break-in is setting the aluminium's grain structure in the pistons. It is the sole determinant of how well your rings will really seal, because if the piston doesn't stay round and the ring lands stay square to the bore centerline, it won't matter what you do to the rings, they'll never seal properly.

As Technique would say...

"To break it in, just FLOOR IT!!!"

lobuxracer, maybe you can clarify your statement but, most good modern day pistons are forged, i.e. their grain structure is set during the forging process. In order to change the grain structure it will have to be practically molten and then re cooled, is this what you're saying? Also, aren't most pistons "cam ground", thus taking care of the expansion you allude to?
