I like the portable types, but I'll never buy another Magellan. It works OK, but I'm stuck with years old maps and no way to upgrade.

I like both... The one in my car with the 7" screen. And a portable when I travel and use rentals or walking around a new city.

Garmin sells GPSes with 7" screens BTW, still less than half the price of the in-car one. (though they're mainly purchased by folks with vans and RVs)

The aftermarket can already give you virtually all the features of the stock system, plus a slew of ones the lexus one can't, like realtime traffic, weather, local fuel prices add movie info, audiobook playback, and more... plus it costs 10 times less... Plus it's 2-3 times cheaper to update the maps... plus you can take it with you on trips... plus you can replace it easily with a better one when even more new features come out for again a tiny fraction of the cost of the Lexus unit.
You'd have to spend BIG BUCKS to get a system as nicely integrated as the stock unit with all the features. Just let it go already...we get it, you don't like the Lexus nav unit. Noted!!

looks cleaner and makes other functions easier to use... the portable ones mounted on a car look cheap..its only about $2k... I wouldn't want the ugly non navigation dash even if it was 6k cheaper... and you always have to hide it otherwise its basically asking for someone to break a window...Point of a luxury car is so get options...getting a bare luxury car defeats the purpose... might as well get a civic...

some people don't care about the cost of being 2k... and in alot of places real time traffic is useless cause traffic always occurs during the same period of time in a trend especially in LA/OC and the bay area.....most people dont want to stare at a POS looking dash driving to work or school everyday...

For looks get the OEM, for real usage get the portable.

But if you got money, get both, you never know, you might need to watch TV when driving.

I couldn't bring myself to justify the extra 2k ... Of coz, if I had a crap load of $$$, then my car would've been optioned out to the max!

i guess you never get into the car class where people are still trying to cut costs, etc. and that's fair. but to have a lexus and throw on cheap accessories. that's ok if you think the portable has the fuctionality that you desire or the oem nav is not available. i just think it's funny that you can't afford the nav (when you want it) so you mount a cheap portable (some as low as $100) just like an escort or a yugo. i have the stock oem escort. and i have a portable. and i have gps in my phones and pdas. it's all the same. the difference for me it the add'l bt and video and backup camera on the oem version. i hate the look of something mounted on my dash and it's begging to be stolen. my 2 cents.

You have far uncredited the portable GPS, yes there are some that even a phone GPS is better BUT others are technical enough to shame the oem NAV (on all makes of cars). Not long ago you can't pick up speed cameras on your GPS now you can, and it come standard on most GPS nowadays (just one of many things that the oem cannot do without hacking, and even so that might not be possible). Nothing worst than having a unit that doesn't function as it suppose to, that's would be called Rice.

And don't forget, if the factory Navi goes bad, how much it will cost compare to after market one!!!! I admit though, the factory one looks nice...

The unit doesn't pick-up the speed camera, it is just a location (waypoint) that when you approach that location the unit alerts you. The portables don't have radar. This function has been available for years on OEM nav systems. You can even set the distance in which it alerts you. A function that the portables have that the OEM doesn’t is ability to link the unit to a computer to plan a long trip. Overall the OEM unit works faster and integrates with most of the vehicle's other systems and is part of the vehicle that doesn't have to be removed and installed every time you leave the vehicle.

I love my OEM navigation, but at times the voice recognition sucks! I like that it does give you a selection of destination routes (sometimes the first route it recommends isn't always the best one to take). Back up camera and blue tooth phone is a big plus too!

Portable would be good too if you want to share it between cars in your household. When I rent a car to go out of town for work, I always get the car option w/ a portable nav (only like $12 extra), and it's not that bad to use.

I agree. Perhaps we should add this topic to the official list of recurring and tiresome, themes that crop up regularly on these forums. They include:

• How old are you?
• Premium or regular gas
• Auto versus manual
• What is your occupation?
• How much do you make a year?

I remember a comparison on Yahoo a month back discussing the pros and cons to both portable and OEM Navi. One interesting point is that many car manufacturers’ engineers have designed the OEM to last 15 years and the portables an average of 3-5. I guess it all depends on usage. I love how OEM navi looks in a car, especially the IS.
