Is it safe to add pure acetone to the gas in the IS 350...because you know, rumor has it that it improves MPG by up to 10%.

It's not harmful to anything in the concentrations the advocates suggest. Sure if you put your fuel system o-rings in pure acetone for a few weeks, they'll expand and soften like you don't want to imagine. (Yes, I did this just to see what would happen with a set of used o-rings from my Supra's injectors.)
I actually did use acetone for a three month trial period in my Scion tC. I experimented with the amount (between 3/4 oz and 2 oz per tank - 14 gallons). I tracked my results on a spreadsheet and determined the results were completely inconclusive, and definitely NOT anything even close to 10%.
I would never waste my time with it again.
And acetone isn't nearly as bad as some would like you to believe. It's freakin' nail polish remover, so it's not going to rot your flesh, and it won't do jack on your car's finish if you clean it up right away. It's certainly no worse than brake fluid.

yeah it's not going to help mpg. it may increase octane a little bit but your ecu won't do anyting with the extra knock resistance anyway so you'll see no gains unless you're not using premium fuel to begin with.

I am not a fan of fuel additives due to the potential long term damage of repeat usage. Some automotive enthusiasts add acetone at around 1 part in 500 to their fuel, following claims of dramatic improvement in fuel economy and engine life. This practice is controversial as there are counterclaims that acetone has no measurable effect or may in fact reduce engine life by adversely affecting fuel system parts. Debates on this subject and claims of Big Oil cover-up intensified when the practice was addressed on the popular American TV show MythBusters in 2006, and shown to have negative effect in the televised fuel economy test. Therefore, I would not waste my time.

If it was THAT easy to increase your gas MPG by 10%, you would see this as the lead news item in every media outlet in the country. There's no way I'd try this.
