Cleaning stained rims from over the winter

I actually had this problem from sprinkler stains. Tried everything to get it off my chromes but nothing worked. So while going through my dads garage to find a solution, I came across brake dust cleaner, it was in a oil form. To my amazement, it took everything off and now my chromes are bright and shiny again.
