I had a neighbor with paper plates on his highly modded STi for two years. Very illegal. California law says no more than 6 months or as soon as the plate is issued, whichever comes first.

Not quite. In California the temporary registration placed on the windshield will have a cancel date listed. It is usually 60 days from the car’s purchase. This is why the cop in Joe Z’s post was interested in seeing it, lest an owner attempts to drive permanently with no plates at all.

Sorry, I read the law not the piece of paper on the windshield. From here:

(c) A vehicle displaying a copy of the report of sale may be operated without license plates or registration card until either of the following, whichever occurs first:
(1) The license plates and registration card are received by the purchaser.
(2) A six-month period, commencing with the date of sale of the vehicle, has expired.
So, there is nothing in California law stating anything about 60 days. You can drive legally until you receive the plates or 6 months has passed since the sale, whichever comes first.

Then why my last two stickers have a 60 limit printed on them?

DMV can print anything they want on the form. It doesn't make it law. That's why (when I used to live in CA) I always went to the leginfo.ca.gov site when I had a question about the actual law, not something somebody said, printed, posted online, etc. There's a LOT of misinformation about California law floating around the Internet, and the Code is available to anyone at leginfo.

no plates and LoVing it! I'll pay the fine if I get a ticket. I am NOT putting holes in my nice bumper so the lazy meter mates can give my a parking ticket from the front.
