Shop said I need a new strut (am I getting scammed)?
So took my vehicle in for an oil change & they mentioned that one of my front struts was completely worn out. Vehicle drives perfectly in the city & highway..no bouncing or shaking. They also only put 5 quarts of oil for my oil change & used 0w20. Not sure if they're under new management or what but this has always been a trustworthy shop that does good work.

Look at the strut for yourself. If you don't see oil/grease around the strut it is likely fine. Is this a 250 or a 350, is it AWD or RWD, did they replace the filter and what year because the oil capacity is different.

2006 IS250 RWD 180k mi. I thought my engine was eating oil & then saw they only added 5 quarts. They said the strut was totally worn out & they could replace it for $1,100. Like I pointed out before I have zero issues/symptoms when driving. Just checked the struts I don't really see grease/oil leaks anywhere.

struts are also usually replaced in pairs.
your oil story: its normal for shops to make a mistake 1/10 or 1/50 times. Even the best shop will make mistakes. Your options are to do your own oil change or to check the shop's work.
It's better IMO for you to do your own oil change or check the work cos then you'll have more info.
Most shops just want you in & out as quick as possible. And they do want work for their shop to do. But easy work, not troubleshooting weird problems.
I had a recent shop experience with one of my cars where something significant was left for ME to do AFTER I paid them. I wasn't mad; I just learned how to do it and now I'm even more connected to the car.

Some places are sketchy to say the least. I heard a story that woman brought the car in for oil change, the shop sprayed the shocks with some oil and they called the customer to deliver the "bad news". Woman took the car home and asked her husband to check for leaky shocks. He wiped them clean and kept an eye for few days to see no oily residue at all...
