This is my first auto and i love it in traffic and putting around town. The only time i miss my manual is backroad blitzing. Now if Lexus were to get a DSG type transmission I would be all over that in a heartbeat.

WOW nice topic.

One of the criteria for a new car was, automatic w/paddle shift. Now i can pretend im driving a Toyota TF107... yes yes i know, i should pretend im in a MP4-22 but im in a toyota not a benz.

I AM NOT LYING this is the gods honest truth for getting/wanting an auto.

Default I don't like the IS250 Stick

It is an ugly awkward shifter in the IS250 MT. I had a 92 SC300 with a 5-speed and that was sweet. I drove the IS250MT and was not impressed with the transmission itself. I am on my second IS350 and just today it chirped 2nd off the line. If the stick was like my buddy's new 335 then I would definilty be interested!

+1 If it were a good stick shift and not a stick-for-the-sake-of-having-stick, I would be all over it.

Another option that I would prefer is a sequential manual; Same shift pedals, just better shifts like VW/Audi DSG/s-tronic.

Funny you mention that, the stick in my current car is a great reason NOT to let my wife drive it

no complaints about the auto tranny on the is350.

however, if they did have a DSG- or SMG-type tranny...

We'll see how long you will last before she forces you to switch.

I would love a manual transmission. The Paddle shifter are horrid, and the downshifting during braking is super annoying.

Actually, I've got my dealer looking for an IS 350 now, but she (the wife) more against it than for it, though she's coming around. I need to come up with a reason to keep her out of the Lexus now

Any ideas?

I would have gone for it.

It would have limited the amount of people wanting to drive my baby!!!

That's the reason I initially chose the 250 over the 350.

Here's some food for thought... Of all the new Ferrari's sold in 2006, only 17% were sold with the manual gearbox. The rest were Ferarri's F1 paddle-shifter transmission. And Ferrari's are ordered, which means these fortunate ones chose this transmission, and didn't "settle" for it. Now I know that the A760E in the IS350 is nothing like the F1, but it helps me make the following point: If the IS350 was available with a DSG or SMG-like gearbox, then HELL YEAH I would have ordered one. Otherwise, I'll stick with my auto, thank you very much...

All my other cars have been manual, this is my first automatic actually, out of 7 cars now i think. Anyway for me transmission didnt really matter. I wasnt set on one or the other, i also looked at the cts-v which only comes in manual and the s4 which can be had in either. Since i bought used, i prolly would have gotten whichever transmission came with car that i found and liked, not based on tranny. I have another car for funfilled shifting so an Auto as my DD is actually kinda nice for a change. Now if there would have been a 350AWD i might have heavily considered that depending on how much it hurt mpg and performance.

I wouldn't.

My C was a manual and although that was a very smooth transmission and fun to drive, I personally think it belongs in a pure sportscar.
