yes, that's what it sounds like... it's not really quiet so it's not something you have to "listen" to in order to hear... i think it could be the steering column since the steering wheel twitches the same time it makes the noise....

Not on my car, i dont have memory, wait... i mean the car doesnt have memory... I HAVE MEMORY but my car doesnt.... Now what were talking about??? OH YEA, the monkeys in the trees in everyones pics

no no no, the buzz yea, i dont have memory steering/mirrors/seats, also if your the only one who drive the car, why would the mirrors/steering reposition themselves if you were the last one in the car? right? or when you turn off the car it goes into a up/back position to let your GUT clear the steering easier? i dunno i dont have it.

Therefore in my car, its the electric steering wheel lock locking and unlocking (as said now in numerous posts).

Time to resurrect this thread. My steering lock has suddenly started making a very loud grinding noise on both start up and shut down. I am not happy. Replacing it will be more work than I'd like to have someone else do to my car.

I am dead sure it's the steering lock. It only happens on initial start up. If I push the start button without pressing the brake for ACC, I don't hear the noise. As soon as I press the brake and hit the button, it grates hard. Same thing on shut down.

Time to revive this thread.

I complained about the steering wheel lock noise and Lexus is addressing the issue. The sad thing is, a friend just bought an '06 LS430 and it makes the exact same noise. Only 20k on his. Mine was quiet for a long time, then started making the grinding sound occasionally. Now it does it every time. Anybody else have this noise?

I can confirm that mine has the same noise. My IS350 is 1 year old.

The noise was not very noticable when new. But lately, it gets loud occassionally at cold start..... Hope it does not get worse, fingers crossed.

UPDATE:

Lexus of Gwinnett says it's "normal" in a message left on my phone. I'm going to challenge them to reproduce this noise on any two new vehicles they have in stock with a motorized steering column tomorrow morning. I bet they change their "normal" statement.

Mine does it too. I doesn't bother me though. Do me a fav. and look up what takes place with the lock. Is it a cam lock with a stepper motor. If so you'll never get away from this noise. It doesn't sound electromagnetic, so I'm thinking motor.

There are no parts available, you need to replace the entire steering column at $1531.87 MSRP + labor. Manual tilt does have a separate unit, but the telescoping steering does not.

It wouldn't bother me if it did it from jump. It only started after about 25k miles (a year or so) and it annoys the crap out of me because it didn't do it when the car was new.

my car just started doing this 2 days ago. sounds like some kind of chain grinding against some other metal. my car has 27k+ miles on it.
can be heard outside as well, and it's really bugging the heck out of me. kinda worried that something might be breaking in there as well.

anyone get some kinda feedback from the dealership yet?
