Default Fold down back seats?

Anyone think a fold back seats mod is possible? I'm just annoyed of the small cargo space on the IS.

I'm coming from an RSX, which was a hatchback with fold down back seats. I was able to fit just about anything in that car. It was like a small station wagon.

I'm thinking they'll adress this for 2008. And if they do, I'm sure you could just swap out the rear seat.

I really don't understand why this wasn't done from the getgo. I mean every car and their mother has some sort of folding rear seat.

my best guess is that the lexus engineers wanted a sealed trunk to aid the subwoofer... or something like that. as a result, fold-down seats wouldn't have worked.

My buddies BMW 3 series has the same stupid passthrough system. I cannot even begin to understand why they didn't even have fold down seats as an option. It is so anoying. Other then that the car rocks though.

On the BMW 3 series, I believe split folder rear seats ARE an option. My sister's '06 330xi has them.

of course we've all asked our dealer about this function or serached for it. i asked my dealer and service technician, and their response was for noise ( perhaps less rattle) and stability. every mazda i've had folds down.

A fold down rear seat would have a negative affect on body rigidity. The partition between the trunk and passenger compartment is a virtual "bulkhead", adding significantly to the strength and torsional rigidity of the body. Lexus didn't want to sacrifice that.

I am coming from a Eclipse that had the same fold down as your RSX. But in my case that is where my amp rack is in my IS so I have no need to fold down the seats. As great as I think fold downs would be I also don't think the IS should be the car you haul things around in...that is why I also have a truck.

If we were talking about a convertible, I'd agree with your assessment.

But if Volvo, famous for the strength of their passenger compartment, and BMW, known for their superb driving dynamics can engineer split folding rear seats into their sedans without compromising the attributes they are most famous for, so can Lexus. Solving problems like this are what engineers are paid for.
