Does the cold weather give such a poor gas mileage?

Colder weather my give you better performance because of the denser air, but with that denser air comes more fuel going into the combustion chamber. End result being that colder weather certainly does not give better economy.

I'm down to 15 mpg in the city. I think that when it's icy or snowy out the car loses traction more, so that's wasteful. Also, I think I tend to brake more which for sure is not helping my mileage. I drove on the freeway yesterday and was able to bump my average mpg to 21.5! First time in months I've been over 18 mpg..
