just today we got the cam gear sound twice....nothing every before that in the last 8k. (only owned it this summer so far, 07 is250 awd).
we're still under power train though so I'm sure we'll get the dealer to look at it. can anyone confirm if this was an actual recall for Canada or if its just a tsib that will require proof as well?

this is very weird...I just completed my 80k km oil change and used the German 0w-30 castrol edge. I used 0w since the winters up here can get fiercely cold and thought it would help a little on the cold starts.

Useful thread!
The intermittent start grind noise began for me several months ago. Thanks to the advice on this thread, I took some video. Upon hearing it, the technician immediately said, "cam gears!"
They had it for a couple of days, fixed it, and I haven't heard it again so far. Hopefully, if it happens again it'll be before my drivetrain warranty expires. Mine is a 2009 IS 350, BTW.

I have a 2009 Lexus IS250 and I heard this noise about 3-4 times now. I don't know if this is a coincidence but I got this noise after switching to synethic Mobile 1 5w-30 at about 56,000km service and still using at 76,000km
the noise is intermittent so far. Once I hear it, I try to reproduce the noise by turning the car off and on but it starts up and drives normally.
I glanced through this long thread and i'm seeing cam gears and switching to castrol edge. It seems to me these are two different issues... what does the cam gear have any thing to do with switching engine oil?
If I take it in to the dealership will they try to ask for oil change proof ? I dont think i have a complete record of my oil changes .. i think one or two is missing .. is this an engine problem ? or a power train problem? if the latter then they wouldn't need proof of oil service would they?
oh yeah i also notice my engine have been burning oil at a way faster rate. i'm down to 1/4 between the dots in just 3 months/3-4000km driven. Should I just back to non-synthetic to test out?

Is there a final resolution about this problem? After reading all these pages it seems like some people got it “fixed” by the dealer and the noise came back.
My car has been making this horrible noise everyday for a few months now especially when it is cold outside. Also a similar noise (sometimes) when slowing down and coming to a stop.
I took all the plastic engine covers so I can heard it clearly.
After going to the dealer and complaining about the noises several times they assured me that everything is fine and normal, the master Lexus tech, the service manager and everyone looked at the car and everything was fine…I cannot believe that this noise is normal.
I am not a mechanic, but I was thinking about the switching engine oil to a different brand or weight. I have been using Mobil 1 5W30, I use this oil in many cars without a problem. I will try the Castrol.

"TOYOTA ANNOUNCES VOLUNTARY RECALLS
In the involved Lexus IS 350, IS 350C and GS 350 vehicles, bolts used to secure the variable valve timing control device can become loose, causing the vehicle to stop while being driven. Early warning for this condition can be identified as a brief rattle noise for approximately 1 second upon a cold start-up.
Owners of vehicles subject to these recalls will receive a notification by first class mail."
I found this info in the Lexus site, but my car is an IS250...it sound like I have the same issue.

I'm getting these noise now after getting the car from the last owner....
Damn it's just so freaking annoying. I've tried adding oil and talked to my service adviser, who confirmed that this will come back after the "fix".
Next time, I'll try the Castrol Edge.
