Update on my car!

car is at 67000 miles. Dealership was able to reproduce the noise. To me the noise sounds exactly like the valve spring on cold start. However, they confirmed that it is my cam gear!!!.

So at 59000 miles my ac compressor blew up. cost repair was 2300
at 67000 miles my cam gears are bad?

this one is under warranty but is this car is going to be a money pit later on?

Do you guys what know what other major maintenance I can do while they have the engine apart?

car is 2007 is 350

Thanks

Is it a 250 or 350? Cam gear noise is very common, its just something you can either fix or deal with. I'd suggest spark plugs, tube seals, cam/crank seals, and have them clean out as much carbon deposits as possible (especially if its a 250).

its a 350. Did the spark plugs already. I don't think grinding noise on start up in common. Seem like someone at the factory didn't do something right on my car.

At least is covered under warranty.

tube seals and cam/crank seals should be done because they're replacing cam gears correct? i'll give them a call and check the carbon deposits and see if they can clean that for me too.

Wait, scratch the crank seal. Do cam seals only, sorry its almost just automatic for me to recommend cam/crank seals together, but that's usually only for timing belts (which the IS doesn't even have lol).

Its common enough for there to be a TSIB on it. And personally, I see at least one or two 2GR-FSE motors a week that grind/rattle upon start-up. Its just a thing with those older motors.

.
Then you think incorrectly.

See also the other 60+ pages of this very thread with people having had the same issue.

it's very common, and not really a "failure" (I've never seen a car stop working because of it- it just makes an annoying noise on startup)

I took my 2006 is250 in yesterday for the start up noise (and also my low engine oil light coming up) and the SA just called to let me know that they were able to reproduce the noise (i had a video just in case) and also see the low oil level BUT did not want to do the tsib just yet. They asked that I pick the car back up and come back in 1,000 miles so that they can document the oil problem and not have to go into the engine twice. My dilema is that my CPO warranty expires on July 26 (3 years) so hope I can put those 1000 miles in 1 months time. If not, the SA says that not too worry - it is documented and I will still be covered. Does this sound right? My though it going on a LONG road trip for 4th of July week. Plus, my drive to and from work is 28 miles so that about 600 miles from here till the 26th.

Does anyone know of any tricks or "Best Conditions" to cause this to happen. My lexus dealer had my car for three weeks and was not able to reproduce the noise.

Hi Everyone,

Well I sifted through all 64 pages of this thread and really don't understand what most of this means
I've got 124k without any issues so far. This is the first time hearing this rattling noise at startup. Was told its the cam gears but I have no idea what that is. Engine was not cold, drove the car above 4 hours ago. Guess I'll take it to the dealer and see what they say, hopefully they can duplicate the noise.

Mine is back to grinding pretty much everyday now...before i got the TSB performed it only did it on hot starts, now it does it on hot and cold starts. My 100,000 mile 6 year powertrain runs on this saturday so I am trying to decide if its worth the 2 hour trip to the dealer and all the hassle for another temporary fix.
