CAI for the ISx50
What’s up all my is350er’s oppps and isx250er's--Luv ya heh :P
I was looking at some threads in the www.my.is forum and had noticed that the LMS Company was trying to design a CAI for our isX50’s.
However, I was wondering if there would be some significant HP gains, as opposed to going with a Short Ram Intake. Because I was thinking about buying the K&N typhoon intake, but now I’m not sure.

too many ppl told me about water messing the engine up with the cold-air...
i heard the gains are much more impressive.. but i dont know if i want to risk it... i heard of water repellent filter covers.. but.. its little too risky if you ask me.

Not risky at all. You'll only hydro-lock your engine if you're driving through water high enough to reach the CAI (water you shouldnt be attempting to ford in your IS anyway) A little rain isnt going to hurt it at all.

Doesn't the stock airbox have its intake outside of the engine compartment anyways?
Modifying the stock intake might be smarter than trying to go with the standard CAI move of mounting the intake down by the bumper. In hot climates - Florida and California the difference between getting air down by the roadway or just outside the compartment up top is going to be negliable at best.
I think Lexus did a good job when they decided to place the stock intake where it is, the intake scoop design could be a little better or maximized a little more to allow more airflow and maybe a marginally bigger pipe.

The stock intake is a true CAI since the snorkel draws its air from in front of the hood's rubber seal. I doubt there will be any benefits to an aftermarket CAI other than sound. There are some minor modifications to the stock intake (which I've done) that might make a .1% difference like the JoeZ pipe, drop-in filter, and shaving the resonator from the snorkel.
That said, the hydrolock issue isn't much of a problem at all. Not only do you have to drive through really deep water, but you have to be cuising at a significant RPM in gear. If the car is slowly idling through deep water, the engine will stall before water actually reaches it. It takes quite a bit of vacuum to suck water up 2 feet.
