If you just gonna use it use it, then get it. If you care about how it look than don't get it. I heard Sony is coming out a really cool one.

I have the previous model, the G-Tech Competition (all-black casing). The neat thing about it, was when the newer SS and RR models came out, they offered the downloadable firmware upgrade to bring it to RR level for FREE!

I have it mounted in my other car -- my MR2 Spyder. If you do any autocross, track days, or canyon drives the Competition (you might be able to get a decent used one on Ebay) or RR might be better suited for you. It measures lateral G's and has realtime G-limit warning indicators which are great for knowing when you are about to exceed your cornering limits... might make you a better driver. It also has logging functions so you can record a run. If all you care about is the 1/4 mile and 0-60 times, then get the SS. Both models also do dyno-style HP/torque plots.

By the way the G-Techs can be mounted either using a suction cup mount to the windshield just like a radar detector (easily removed within seconds) or permanently mounted somewhere (using the provided stand or some custom setup). So you can use it between multiple cars like I do, or loan it to friends when they want to play around with it, after they do mods, etc.

If the display color can change to match the IS display, it may look OK mounted permanently.
