Default Setting the AL-Shift point?

On page 99 and 100 of the owners manual, it states"the initial shift range may be set to 3 or 2 if the AL-SHIFT has been operated while the shift lever was in the D position".

I know I am doing something wrong but, while in D, I shift the paddle down to 3. It sitll selects the 4 position.

Has anyone tried this?

Not AL-shift, but AI shift, as in artificial intelligence.

My understanding is that when in Drive, if you are driving very aggresively, e.g., stomping the gas pedal, lots of hard acceleration, etc., the transmission controller will alter its shift strategies to hold onto revs longer and raise shift points.

My guess is that if you are romping on the gas (in Drive) hard enough to invoke these alternate shift strategies, you may see your initial shift range set to 3 or 2.

No, my understanding is the the transmission controller will alter its shift strategies to hold onto revs longer and raise shift points, UP TO THE CURRENT SET HIGHEST GEAR, ie #3. So how do you change it?

No, when the selector is in Drive, the transmission is free to select any gear from 1 to 6. The section of the owners manual you quoted refers to what happens when you initial switch from drive to sport shift (manumatic) mode. Normally, it will switch over in 4 (i.e., gears 1-4 available). But if you have been driving aggresively, it may come up in 3 or 2.

No, the manual specifically states to leave it in D.

I think we've all given up trying to figure out what you're talking about, because the paddles don't do anything when you're in "D".

Thanks guys. I am not tring to be a butt. I am trying to understand what it says.
The way I was told is you can select how high the Sport mode of the S - D position shifter will ALLOW auto shifing while in sport mode.

Page 99:
" The initial shift range in S mode is automactically set to 5 or 4 according to vehicle speed. However, the initial shift range may be set to 3 or 2 if the AL-SHIFT has been operated while the shift lever was in the D position".

And for the second time, it's not AL-shift, it's AI shift. AI shift is not the paddles. AI shift is the logic that holds revs and raises the shift points during aggresive driving.

What it means is that when you shift from drive to sport (manumatic) mode, you will usually start in "4", but if you've been driving aggressively enough that the AI shift logic has kicked in, it may start you off in a lower (3 or 2) range.

OK Bichon. Thanks for your patience with me. I think I got it now. I was thinking it was something I could set with the paddles before I shift into S mode. It is not. It is computer controlled, as in "Automatic Logic" (AL).

Thanks again.

Bichon is correct.

I don't drive my IS that hard so when I go into "S" mode, the gear range usually goes to between 1 and 4, even if I'm in OD already. Manual is just stating depending on how AI-SHIFT has adapted to your "D" mode driving, when you throw the IS into "S" mode, the gear range can be as low as either between 1-2 or 1-3 rather than 1-4 or 1-5.

There is no way you can explicitly change what the highest gear is allowed (2-5) when you go into "S" mode because AI-SHIFT determines it. You can certainly make it implicit to the AI-SHIFT system by driving it very hard but just drive how you normally drive and let it figure it out yourself.

System is smart enough now when I mash the accelerator, it instantly drops into 2-3 when I'm already in 6/OD.

Cheers,
Kermee
