From the service manual, page PP-27:
Code:
Drain and refill w/ Oil filter change 6.3 liters (6.7 US qts, 5.5 imp. qts)
Drain and refill w/o Oil filter change 5.9 liters (6.2 US qts, 5.2 imp. qts)
Dry fill 7.2 liters (7.6 US qts, 6.3 imp. qts)
Yeah, this means there's nearly a quart in the engine that doesn't ever come out.

Haha, hey Lance - I'm glad I wasn't the only one who had to try several stores before I found some 5W-20 actually in stock somewhere!

Last oil/filter change I put in 6.55 liters (6.87 quarts). After filling it up, I started/stoped the engine before checking the level on the dipstick. I checked 3 times since the new oil was so clear I had a hard time seeing it(M1 EP). Wonder if I'm not putting more stress on the engine now with higher oil pressure. Or does the oil pan has room for compensation?

Thanks for the info lobuxracer. That’s allot of left over oil. Does it stay in the oil pump and hose? Where else can it hide?

When I was changing oil on my last car I always turn the engine over without actually start it to let a bit more oil out from the drain plug. We can’t do it with our cars now since the engine start will obviously start the car before we can stop it. But if it gets almost litter of old oil out perhaps we should do it?

There are 24 oil filled lifters. They're never going to give up their contents, and you wouldn't want them to. The rest is hard to say, but it really isn't as big a deal as it seems at first glance. It just makes me more convinced I'm better off running a decent synthetic (Mobil 1) so the oil that remains is in better shape than a high mileage conventional.

There's nothing in the service manual that says how much oil the lash adjusters contain, but if they're even just 15cc, that's a pretty substantial amount of of the 0.9 quarts that remains.

If you're really worried about getting every possible drop, raise the driver's side about an inch higher than the the passenger's side. Both the oil filter and the oil pan drain towards the passenger's side. It might help get a few more drops out.

Good knowledge. Yes jack-stands are a must, we had a kid from work have his car fall on him( 98 mustang cobra very low to the ground) luckily he is built like a pencil. He had one of those 2ton hydraulic jacks, slide unde3r his car to wipe oil off the oil pan to find a leak, under there maybe 5 min. His neighbor looked out her window and saw his legs kicking. He lost feeling in his legs for a day( Pinched nerve), luckily he is okay now but he earned a new nickname....Jack-stand.

It is not. The small o-ring is only used on the AWD. It seals the filter drain cap. There is no filter drain cap on the RWD cars.

Just to help out any of you guys who do your own oil changes. You can add a simple attachment called the Fumoto Oil Drain valve. I had one on my S2000 and it made changing your oil that much easier, and cleaner. I actually bought one for my LS400 that I had, but sold it before I installed it, and low and behold it fits the IS350 as all Lexus models have the same sized bolt.

It replaces your stock oil drain bolt and replaces it with a VERY sturdy and high quality valve that allows you to open and close your oil pan at the flick of a switch. I'm going to be putting mine on this week and swap the oil over to mobil 1.

I installed the Fumoto valve on my GS the first time I changed my own oil. Haven't had a chance to use it yet but it looks like it'll make things much easier and less messy.

The Fumoto valve was awesome on the S2000 because you didn't even have to jack the car up to do the oil change. On the 2IS, I just think it could make it a little less messy, but not all that much easier.
