I basically do whatever service is recommended in the manual of the car. My Audi says change the oil every 10000 then thats what I do. Of course I don't keep cars very long, my car is 3 years old with 20k and I am getting ready to trade it.

It's a collosal waste of resources. Funnily enough, truckers are one of the few breeds that practice the long oil change interval with regular analysis throughout its life. Big rigs have huge sumps, and those guys rightfully cringe at the thought of oil changes. Sump size plays a big role in oil life over the change interval, but even your average 4-quart 4-banger can go 5000 miles without issue.
I'd encourage everyone to take a look at http://www.bobistheoilguy.com and please stop changing your damn oil every 3000 miles.

I don't ever remember anyone talking about oil changes in the UK, just happened at regular service.

In the UK Audi service intervals are either every 10k fixed or you can choose to go onto variable servicing using long life synthetic oil that is changed every 18k-20k miles.

My dad is a owner of a bmw/mercedes repair shop. I go there to do all my work. Maybe thats why I change my oil more frequently then others.
