Anybody using synthetic oil yet? If so what brand?

I only have about 600 miles on my car, so an oil change won't be necessary for quite a while. When I do change it, I will be probably using Mobil 1. I'ved used it in my last car for the past 11 years, and it still runs like a champ.

try searching Lubro Moly. it's a german brand. I have never tried myself, but users on euro car forums love it.

I plan to switch to Mobil 1 at 10,000 miles. Don't change to synthetic too early, as it will impede break in, leading to an increase in oil consumption over the life of the engine.

has anybody actually done an oil change on this car yet. I am going to have to do mine soon i am almost to 10k miles. I was wondering how easy it was to get to the oil pan and filter, i heard that there is a plastic engine bay cover on the bottom of the car as well. Would i have to remove that or are there openings to get to the oil drain plug and the filter.

I haven't done mine yet, but I did crawl under the car for a peek. You need to remove the cover to access the drain plug.

From what I hear, this car has a cartridge type filter that is accessed from the top of the engine.

I heard that many times, but i always wondered why some car companys
use it in the cars right from the start.. I personally don't see how it can
stop the break in,, it might just take a few more miles to happen, but who knows...

I agree with Bichon about letting the engine brake in first.

Years ago when I rebuilt a big block V8, I put Mobil 1 in it
right from the start. After 1000 miles of driving, the rings
failed to seat and break it. It just always smoked. Then
after I drained the oil and relaced it with regular oil, the
smoking stopped after about 50 miles. On the next oil
change I went back to Mobil 1 and everything was fine then.
I guess the synthetic has so little friction that the parts
cannot burnish and break in properly.

On my current car that I purchased used with 10,000 miles,
this was not an issue. I right away switched it to Mobil 1 and now have
174,000 miles on it. I change the oil at the manufacture's
recomended interval of 8,000 miles and never have to add
a quart in between changes even to this day.

Needless to say I swear by Mobil 1 and will also put in my
IS350 when the time comes.

I'll probably stick to conventional oil, as i like to change it frequently
and won't be putting the car through many "cold starts", since my car's
usually in a heated garage..

Hey Y'all,
The first oil change is free at the dealer. (5K Service). You can request synthetic. We have Mobile 1 at work. Yes, it is a cartridge type filter. There is a plastic cover that has to be removed, from under the car, to access the filter housing. The drain plug can be accessed without having to remove any covers. Replaced the wifies oil at 4k and used Mobile 1.
A word to the wise: DO NOT overtighted the oil filter housing. Just snug. 12ft lbs is the torque spec. if I remember right.

A word of caution for those planning to perform your own oil change.
I was at the Mazda dealer to have an oil change for my Miata, a guy was in with a cross-threaded drain plug. $600+ to replace the oil pan.
I know, everyone can do it better than the dealer. but, when bad things happen, we never plan it.
If the dealer changes your oil, you are covered.

For me, it will be Mobil1 (full syn) at about 3K.
