Default Manual Mode in New IS tranny

Does the manual mode on the new IS transmission automatically downshift for you when you floor the gas pedal or does it hold the gear? Reason I ask is because when I test drove the IS350, it seemed to have automatically downshifted for me even when I was using the pedal shifters. In my Celica GT-S, the car would not downshift or upshift unless you told it to.

I would think so,its still a trip-tronic.Unless its a manual, any other trip-tronic or the so called manual mode will shift itself.

It seems the paddle shifters merely dictates the highest gear available, and the car automatically downshifts to 1st gear when you come to a stop. When you floor the gas pedal, it will rev to the redline and then shifts automatically to the next gear, until it gets to the highest gear allowed by the paddle.

The new IS' tranny works the same way as the e-shift found in the IS300, GS300 and earlier GS400 models...as well as the 7th gen Celica GTS E-Shift model. The only difference for the New IS, you can start in 1st gear instead of 2nd.

Ok, so let's say i was in third gear at 3500 RPM, if I floor it, it should still be in third gear right? When I test drove the IS350, it seemed to upshift and downshift for me automatically, even in e-shift mode.

Lets say you have 3 selected in M-Mode/Sport Mode/E-shift whatever you like to call it. By selected 3, you start off in first gear and will only go as high as 3rd gear. it will shift normally 1-2-3. you select 4, it will start 1-2-3-4. It will only upshift to the next highest gear you select and you can pull the car to the end or up to redline of the gear you selected. If you are in 3rd gear and you floor it, it will down shift to 2nd or 1st depending on your speed and rpm...it does not just lockout 3rd gear. It's a fool proof system to keep from people lugging the motor and putting unneeded stress on the torque converter and tranny. It's worked this way for the 5spd auto tranny in the GS300, GS400 and IS300. For the Celica, it was just a 4spd auto...so the tranny computer allowed it to hold whatever gear you selected.

That is not what I heard. From what the chief engineer said was that it lets the driver even hit the rev limiter in every gear and bounce off of it. It would not upshift automatically to make it "feel" a lot closer to a real manual transmission (or SMG). As for downshifting when punching from a roll, there could be a possibility if the gear is too high for the speed and rpm and a downshift is necessary, it might downshift in order to prevent overload on the engine.

Hmm, so there is no way to hold the selected gear? So its sort of like the D, 4,3,2,L in the regular automatic transmissions then right?

Why couldn't they do that with the 6 spd auto in the IS? I liked driving on the freeway and sometimes just flooring it in 4th when going 80 mph to speed up a little because third gear would put me at 5000 rpm which is too much power.

too much stress on the tranny and torque converter. More tranny problems down the road.

yes you can hold a gear. For example, if you want to hold it in 3rd gear, just select 3 and it will not go higher than 3rd; however, if you slow down to much, it will downshift for you automatically so you don't crawl around with a high gear. It's convenient so you don't have to manually shift down to 1st every time you come to a stop.
