I see this $299 fee on the contract, what is it and do you pay traditionally pay it?

I think it's also called the sucker fee.

I didn't have that on my prelim lease... only fees were title and registration ($142), inspection ($10), documentation fee ($45), bank fee (for the lease) $600, tire recycling fee ($12.50). The last one sounds fishy but when I priced out an Audi S4 it was on there too, so I think it's all legit.

Was it a lease or purchase? The thread title says Purchase. I never lease, so I couldn't tell you what hidden fees there may be.

It's for a purchase and it's preprinted on the contract.

Might be a Kansas thing. We don't have that in California. Only tax, reg, doc, and tire tax over here for purchases.

Yeah man, I've never seen that before. Best thing to do is ask the Finance Manager (the person who helps you sign all paperwork), that person is in charge of knowing how the fees break down on contract. Otherwise if you trust your salesperson you can ask him.

And congrats on your new car, don't forget to post pictures so everyone else on here can be jealous!

I just purchased an IS350 from a Chicago dealer and the purchase price was $44,929 in addition to that, I paid an Administration Fee of $55.00.

There is a $98 "Not Required By Law" fee at the MD dealer (not sure if all of them but definitely at Lexus of Annapolis) covers them going to the state and filing all the paperwork and such. The fee is not required but I would rather have them take care of it instead of me spending half a day dealing with it.

Thanks for the replies. I still need to ask exactly what it is so I can be sure if it's required or not. I'm buying my car out of state so I'll need to take care of my own paperwork.

I wouldn't pay $299 for some kind of convenience fee that stealer has made up.

Argue not to pay it, ask them to take $299 of the sticker price if they dont I would walk away.

I wouldn't just tell them you're not going to pay it... Sounds like you're going to ask about it first, which I think is a good idea. Although it is a little suspicious that the $299 is typed in a different font than everything else on the contract... as if it were added in later.

I work in Dealer Finance for a bank so I know exactly what this charge is - it's called dealer profit (it goes by many offical name but that'w what it is)- and forget about getting them to waive it - it's completly legal and dealers are told by their parent owners this fee is charged everytime to everyone period. I paid 279.00 here - and I have known this dealer for years - pretty common practice here in the south - check the contract for pre-payment penalties, late fees, etc...we bankers love to bury those in the contract too...sorry...
