Default Learned something new IS

I learned that the new IS will have some type of identifier on the headlights and other sought after body parts called data dots. These data dots when viewed under a microscope contain VIN information about the car...maybe not helping to prevent theft, but if states start stiffening the penalties for theft then getting caught with these things will prevent some of those dirtbags from messing with our rides.

Interesting to know. Where did you hear this? What other "sought after" body parts have the data dots?

Hrm...usually the entire underside of cars are coated with Datadots, well only the cars that have them, such as all Subarus down here in Australia.

Default Data dots

I read the information in the literature given to Lexus employees at the Taste of Lexus event. They didn't speak of any other parts in particular, but I think it was meant more as a this is the technology we are using instead of that stupid window etch crap. As for the data dots on the underside of the car...I think those are the aerodynamic dimples (like on a golf ball).

I think the data dots and the aerodynamic dimples serve two different unrelated functions.

What happens if you wreck the car though? Wouldn't that jack up the cost of parts since they're now vehicle-specific?

No, they'd use parts with 'part data dots' which would still be traceable.
