Exclamation PR: Lexus IS 250/350 Luxury Sport Sedans Set to Redefine Segment

With Unprecedented Levels of Performance and Luxury in All-New Design

PASADENA, Calif., July 12, 2005 – In a road and racetrack setting that will challenge the best luxury-performance cars and their drivers, Lexus introduced the all-new IS 250 and IS 350 luxury sport sedans today. First shown at the New York International Auto Show last March, the new IS family fully reveals surprising levels of performance, luxury and safety in a new-look Lexus design.

“The new IS sedans are designed to take Lexus to new heights of performance, luxury and style in the entry-luxury sport sedan segment,” said Lexus Group Vice President and General Manager Bob Carter. “Our customers want best-in-class on every level and we have no desire to disappoint them.”

Offering three distinctly different models, the longer, wider and roomier IS sedan arrives with a new family of high-output V6 engines, using manual and automatic six-speed transmissions driving the rear wheels, or all four with available all-wheel drive. Combining a strong new body structure, new suspension systems, powerful new brakes and a sport-oriented Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM) system (IS 350), the new IS sedans are poised to disrupt the class performance hierarchy.

As the second Lexus model to benefit from a new Lexus design language, the all-new IS takes a notably sporty, yet more luxurious turn, in order to bring the best of both worlds to demanding customers.

Expanded Lineup and New Features Broaden Appeal
Three models form the basis of the new IS family:

    2006 Lexus IS 250/350/2-2-2-2

In addition to the all-new powertrains, the new IS family also brings a fresh array of standard and available features designed to enhance every aspect of owning and driving an IS.
Notable standard equipment such as the convenient SmartAccess keyless entry and engine start system, six-disc in-dash CD changer, driver- and front-passenger knee airbags, 13-speaker premium audio and dual-zone automatic climate control are a luxury statement by themselves.

The new IS also brings premium options more often associated with higher-priced models including the Adaptive Front headlamp System (AFS), heated and ventilated front seats, Pre-Collision System (PCS), a power tilt-telescope steering wheel, and a new 14-speaker Mark Levinson audio system among others.

Powerful Technology for New V6 Engine Family

Two brand-new V6 engines debut in the new IS sedans. The 2.5-liter version found in the IS 250 uses dual Variable Valve Timing with Intelligence (VVT-i) and a new direct-to-cylinder fuel injection system to help deliver 204 horsepower and 185 lb.-ft. of torque. The new 3.5-liter version develops a best-in-class 306 horsepower and 277 lb.-ft. of torque, resulting in an estimated 0-60 mph time of 5.6 seconds.

The 3.5-liter engine utilizes both port- and direct-fuel injection as part of its higher state of tune. This optimizes the fuel mixture, particularly in both light and medium load conditions, creating a precise burn, higher output, aiding drivability, lower emissions and fuel economy. The new direct fuel injection system provides a cooling effect in the cylinders, which allowing higher compression ratios. The results are substantial improvements in engine efficiency with increased power and fuel economy.

Both engines also benefit from reduced internal friction via chain driven camshafts and roller rocker arms, again aiding efficiency. And both use aluminum heads and cylinder blocks that feature special cast-in “spiny” cylinder liners to improve liner stability and cooling by increasing surface contact area with the cylinder block.

A dual exhaust system reduces exhaust backpressure at high rpm while a variable valve system in the mufflers helps reduce noise at lower rpm. Extensive use of stainless steel in the exhaust system minimizes weight while improving durability.

    2006 Lexus IS 250/350/3-3-3-3

The combination of these technologies contributes to substantial improvements in both performance and fuel economy. The prelimary combined miles-per-gallon estimate for the IS 250 and IS 350 is between the mid-20s and high 20s. All 2006 IS models carry an Ultra-Low Emission Vehicle II (ULEV II) emissions certification from the EPA.

Transmission Speeds in Multiples of Six
Standard in the IS 250 (not available in the IS 250 AWD and IS 350), a new six-speed manual transmission is designed to take full advantage of its free-revving 2.5-liter V6 engine. Gear ratios are carefully matched to the engine horsepower and torque characteristics.
A new sequential-shift six-speed automatic will also be offered in the IS 250 and will be standard in the IS 250 AWD and IS 350. It’s designed to provide smooth yet crisp shifts for comfort and response.

Steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters for the automatic are designed to provide maximum involvement and control for driving enthusiasts. Robust construction and mounting help ensure rapid operation and response with appropriate feedback.

    Sophisticated Dynamics Matches Aggressive Power
All-new front and rear suspension, steering and brake systems unite with standard Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) in the IS 250 while the IS 350 receives Lexus’ new Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM) system to provide superior dynamics and control, while continuing the IS legacy of driving fun. The new suspension designs optimize dynamic wheel alignment to help provide precise, confident handling and maximum tire grip. A performance suspension package with 18-inch wheels and tires is available for even better handling response.

At the front, a redesigned double wishbone system with a high-mount upper control arm serves up several benefits. High-strength steel and aluminum suspension components keep unsprung weight low, which helps keep the vehicle stable on bumpy surfaces while improving ride comfort. The lower arm uses a large, liquid-filled bushing at the rear to minimize vibration and harshness.

A new multi-link rear suspension employs the same design approach that places high value on precise control of geometry in all dynamic conditions, helping to make the new IS ultra stable and yet exciting to drive. A combination of high-strength steel and lightweight aluminum components is also utilized, again to improve both handling and ride comfort.

    2006 Lexus IS 250/350/4-4-4-4

New mono-tube shock absorbers with rebound springs are used front and rear. These make use of much larger pistons than conventional twin-tube shocks of the same size and their larger size offers superior damping force response and control, especially at low piston speeds. Multi-leaf linear control valves also help in this regard. The rebound springs offer improved body control without typical ride comfort tradeoffs.

A completely new Electric Power Steering (EPS) rack and pinion steering gear is now mounted ahead of the front axle centerline, providing more linear steering response, precise control and better straight-line stability. In addition, the vehicle speed-sensitive system offers better control of steering assist, eliminates parasitic loss from a pump, and reduces weight and complexity. The new system is easily adjusted to the driver’s comfortable position via manual or an available new power tilt/telescope steering wheel.

Large and powerful new brakes are used on all IS models. The IS 350 adds spiral fins to the vented 13.15-inch front rotors and aluminum four-piston calipers for excellent heat dissipation, low unsprung weight, and tremendous stopping power. They’re controlled by a variable ratio link-type pedal and tie rod-type booster, both of which improve brake-pedal rigidity and system response.

Standard high-performance low-profile 225/45R17 front tires and 245/45R17 (225/45R17 on AWD) rear tires, link the new IS firmly with the road. Optional ultra-high performance 225/40R18 front tires and 255/40R18 rear tires provide the serious enthusiast driver with the utmost cornering grip. They’re available as a stand-alone option or as part of the performance package.

The available performance package offers enthusiast drivers a way to further enjoy their passion for cars by notably sharpening an already excellent dynamic package. The performance package includes 18-inch wheels, sport-tuned suspension with firmer shocks and about a half-inch lower ride height.

Power + Control = Driving Pleasure
All of the sophisticated dynamic hardware is managed by a Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management System (VDIM) on the IS 350. Most recently introduced on the 2006 Lexus GS 430 and RX 400h, VDIM is designed to complement the inherently excellent dynamics of the new IS.

    2006 Lexus IS 250/350/5-5-5-5

VDIM enhances handling, traction and brake control systems that normally react to an already unstable condition by anticipating tire slippage before a skid, slide or wheel spin occurs and make stabilizing corrections that maximize dynamic capability. This coupled with tight integration of all systems makes VDIM feel transparent to the driver, minimizing distractions during the driving task.
To do this, VDIM uses an active-control strategy that takes its cues from a comprehensive range of sensors, including steering angle, yaw rate, deceleration, brake pressure, brake pedal stroke, wheel speed and others. Their signals are used individually by the various traction control systems and collectively by VDIM. These systems include electronic throttle, traction control, ABS, EBD, VSC and EPS.

For the IS, VDIM is programmed to allow drivers to probe deeper into the limits of handling before discreetly, but effectively applying braking, throttle and steering assistance. This approach is designed to maximize driving fun without giving away control to the elements. At the same time, control in marginal driving conditions is maintained to help drivers on even the most difficult roads.

Fresh, Dynamic, Functional Design—with Luxury in Abundance
With its styling clearly influenced by Lexus recent LF-series of concept cars, the new IS shows a strong family resemblance with its stable mate, the 2006 GS, while capturing its own distinctively sporty, yet upscale essence. A notably wide stance and long wheelbase, coupled with tightly drawn bodywork, lends a muscular and sophisticated style.

Both interior space and dynamic performance benefit from increases in overall length (3.5 in.), width (3.0 in.), wheelbase (+2.4 in.) and tread (1.9 in. rear).

The roomy, luxurious yet sporty cabin is complemented by intelligently designed displays and controls designed to make driving both simple and pleasurable. Bright, clear Optitron gauges, and smartly integrated metallic and available bird’s eye maple trim, help create a luxurious, yet no-nonsense ambience. New interior materials and attention to detail leaves no doubt that this newest IS represents the heart of Lexus – quality.

    2006 Lexus IS 250/350/6-6-6-6

An important contributor to performance, fuel economy and stability lies in the new IS aerodynamic package. Carefully shaped body contours, a subtle ducktail shape of the trunk lid, and specially shaped “air kick” tail lamps contribute to a low exterior drag coefficient (Cd) of 0.28.

The low Cd is enhanced with careful attention to underbody-airflow management, which not only reduces drag but is also designed to minimize and balance front/rear lift. Carefully designed underbody elements help smooth the surfaces or re-direct air around obtrusions in order to promote airflow and minimize turbulence under the car.

The resulting low-drag body makes best use of engine power, and the low lift enhances high-speed stability and handling balance.

Luxury, Comfort and Convenience Not to be Missed
While the sound of more than 300 hp will resonate with driving enthusiasts, everyone will appreciate Lexus’ ability to keep undesirable noises from spoiling the party. A highly rigid yet lightweight body creates the starting point. To this Lexus adds strategically placed noise-suppression materials, including Lexus-like attention to detail such as noise-absorbing sun visors. Acoustic-windshield glass also contributes to the quiet cabin.

The attention paid to aerodynamic drag also pays off here with low wind noise – above and below the car. IS designers also gave careful thought to the A-pillar and outside rear-view mirror shapes in order to suppress wind noise in a notoriously difficult location. And special seals around doors and windows help keep what little noise is generated, outside.

The newly luxurious and sporty demeanor of the newest IS sedans are fed by a comprehensive list of safety, comfort and luxury features seldom found in its class. For example, SmartAccess keyless entry with push-button start is standard, and features such as a power tilt/telescoping steering wheel and touch-screen navigation system with back-up camera are available.
These and other features available on the new IS, such as new dual (low and high beam) High-Intensity Discharge (HID) headlamps, Adaptive Front lighting System (AFS), Dynamic Radar Cruise Control and heated/ventilated front seats are normally found only in more expensive luxury cars.

A dual zone automatic climate control keeps temperatures from becoming a point of argument, while back seat passengers enjoy their own A/C vents.

    2006 Lexus IS 250/350/7-7-7-7

    Safety in Mind
Like all Lexus vehicles, the new IS packs a wide range of dynamic and active safety systems like Traction Control (TRAC), anti-lock brakes (ABS), Brake Assist (BA), Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and Daytime Running Lamps (DRL). A new Tire Pressure Monitor System helps the driver maintain tire pressures that are both safe and optimal for ride and handling.

The new IS body construction plays a central role here as well, with a rigid passenger cell and careful design of sub-structures to absorb or dissipate collision energy. In addition to an advanced driver-side front airbag, the all-new IS has a new twin-chamber front passenger airbag, a world-first development designed to reduced secondary injuries related to airbag deployment. The IS also comes with driver and front passenger knee airbags, front and rear side curtain airbags and front seat side-mounted airbags to greatly enhance the passive safety of the new IS. First introduced on the LS 430, Lexus’ pre-Collision System (PCS) is now also available on the new IS. The PCS uses a millimeter-wave radar sensor to help detect obstacles in front of the car and a pre-collision system computer with vehicle speed, steering angle and yaw-rate inputs that help to determine in advance whether a collision is unavoidable. It then preemptively retracts front seat belts and pre-initializes Brake Assist so that increased braking is applied the instant the brake pedal is depressed.

    Music Power – With Sophistication

The standard audio system in the IS plays like the Lexus Premium Audio System it is.
With 194 watts of music power and 13 speakers, it puts many “premium” systems in stark contrast. It includes a convenient mini-jack in the center console that will allow iPod and MP3 players to send their music through the IS’ amplifiers and speakers.

Like its Lexus stable mates, the new IS now offers an optional Mark Levinson Premium Audio System to please the most discerning audiophiles. The system offers 300 watts of power, 14 speakers (including a center speaker and sub woofer) and 7.1-channel speaker architecture.
The new Lexus IS luxury sport sedans will go on sale in North America in October. Prices will be announced near the on-sale date.

Exclamation PR: Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) Horsepower Change

Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) Horsepower Change

The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) revised Standard J1349, which sets forth the protocol for testing horsepower and torque as of the first of this year. One purpose of the change was to try to achieve more consistent ratings throughout the industry. California requires that advertised horsepower claims be determined using the SAE Standard. The revision specifies that certain equipment be installed on the engine and operating at the time of testing, as well as the use of the manufacturer-required grade of fuel during the test. Presumably, all manufacturers will be using the revised Standard for future tests.

Lexus decided to retest most of its engines using the new protocol this year. Consequently, the horsepower and torque ratings for some of our vehicles declined this year. Any changes in horsepower and torque ratings based on the implementation of the new testing protocol, however, have no impact on actual engine performance.

very nice, ever since we got the sc430, i think ml upgrade is a must for the lexus. even the pioneer system in my gs4 now sounds like nothing compared to the ml, let alone the system on my old is300

and it's interesting that they resort back to a 8" sub on the new is. the 8" sub in my sc430 is my only complain

Despite the fact that the New IS only has an 8" sub, the bass is actually very fullfilling for both front and rear seats. It's insane!

really? that's cool, i gotta try it out then. of the ls430, gs430, and the sc430 with ml i have listened to, all are lacking base, probably due to the 8" setup. on the new gs430 it was the first lexus with 10" sub from ml, and the base was soooo much better. with the ml system on lexus moving to the next leve, i really expect the same on the new IS.

      thanks for the news ryan!

I can only believe you're right. You speak of your actual experience after all. The ML guys must have found the 8" to be better suited to the IS cabin like you said, and they must've done some good tweaking to it to make it sound better than the 8" used in the 1st-gen systems.

Thanks for posting all the PRs.

Isn't .1% Total Harmonic Distortion not quite as accurate as other ML systems with .01% THD?

Is the IS system less accurate than others?

I pointed that out too when the spec of the ML system for the new GS was first released. Apparantly that doesn't prevent the GS's ML system from being rated THE best stock audio system of all cars, even though Lexus' marketing was all bragging about the .01% THD figure when the 1st-gen ML system made its debut.

If I read the main post correct, it would appear that LEXUS went with digital amplifiers in the new ML system. That would explain the increase in THD.

Digital amps are superior to analog amps in almost all ways except for THD. They are cheaper, lighter, cooler, more energy efficient.
