yup, the first yr s class so so horribly built that a lot of owners just literally sold theirs and went back to the old style. mb headquarters got so mad together with the extremely poorly built ml class, so they said do whatever it takes to get back quality. the new s classes are much better than the first yr already. but still, the electronics are killing the car

After reading this whole thread and other 06 IS related ones, I'm like

Why doesn't everyone just see the things that are obvious instead of believing all kinds of tales.

Who does Lexus aim for with the new IS (as it tried with the current gen)? Young male professionals - the BMW 3 series crowd.

What does the competition have? 2 engine choices with the top engine choice equal to or lower than the next sedan in their line up (drivetrain in the E90 330 will be the same as the dreivetrain in the E60 530 - by 06 MY).
Most other Luxury cars are the same way - the entry level sedan large engine choice is the same as the small engine choice on the next level sedan. What makes anyone believe Lexus will be any different. It is just too darned expensive to have multiple drivetrains.

Look at the new E90 325 - it will have the same 6 sp Steptronic as the all of the rest of the cars - it's probably cheaper for BMW to make the more expensive AT and put in all of their cars instead of coming up with some cheaper 5AT (or keep using the current 5AT) for a single model. Lexus will be no different - they will use the 06 GS300 drivetrain, as a whole, in the IS300 including the 6sp AT. More than likely, like the E90, the same 6AT will be mated to the smaller 2.5L engine also. The only question will be if they offer an MT - you can bet if they do, it'll be the same with both engines.

And all of this obsession with HP is crazy. If you want to obsess do it over the real performance of the car. If the info on various forums are to be belived the 300HP RL does 0-60 in 6.7s while the 06 GS with "only" 245HP will do it in 6.8 - basically a driver race - like anyone with those kind of cars race theirs.

Yes, down the road you might get some "special" version of the cars a la S, M or AMG. But that's not mainstream - that's just marketing to have something to brag about.

Just look at the numbers:

E90 325 2.5L I6 215HP ~ 190tq, 3200lbs, 6AT or 6MT, 178" long
330 3.0L I6 255HP - 220tq, 3200+lbs, 6AT or 6MT

I'd venture to guess that on paper the IS250 and IS300 numbers are going to be within 5% of those numbers. The only question is how close will the 245HP IS300 come to the 0-60 time of 6s of the E90 330?

And all of this talk of it being AWD is just as silly - Lexus is not chasing Audi with the next IS. Yes it will have an option like the x in the 3 series lineup but it will not be standard - it will be available for the 10% of the crowd that needs it in northern climes - who incorrectly think that AWD will get them out of snowy condition without winter tires.

3GR-FE 3.5L V6 & 4GR-FE 2.5L V6. Possible engine choices for the new IS platform. There will also be a 320hp variant. Don't know if that will be the 3.5 or possibly V8. These GR series engine is based off the same block of the 1GR-FE V6 found in the later model 4Runner V6 and the new 05 Tacoma. As for the numbers and official word, we will just have to wait patiently and see.
