anyone in here plasti dipped their wheels? I have the stock 17's on my car, but I want to paint them black. I brought them to a local powder coat shop today to get a quote, but he quoted me approximately $650.. It'd be that much because two of my wheels have a curb rash-like blemish, but in the middle of the wheels and kind of deep, and he would have to try to get that out, otherwise the wheels would probably look bad. and for that price I could almost get decent brand new wheels. I'm just exploring all my options for the time being, so if anyone has plasti dipped their wheels, I wanna see! I've never messed around with it before so idk if it would look bad or something, i don't want to make the whole car look bad. suggestions please!

My cousin plasti dips everything on his car. Then two weeks later, he changes the color. Rims, badges, mirror covers and body panels. I have never seen any damage after being removed.

how about any chips or anything in the actual plasti dip while it's on? if it's done right, does it look good?

chips are chips... they will show thru the plast-dip unless you do some sort of bondo filling

no... this stuff holds up pretty well. Just make sure you make it thick with mutilple light coats

or you can look on craigslist for some nice aftermarket wheels.

I did mine at home. If you have chrome rims you want to clean the rims then finish it with steel wool. then apply 4 or 5 layers evenly on the wheels. Mine came out pretty good had I've had it for almost a year without it peeling. Ended up doing the emblems and grill, because it looked pretty clean. Make sure you mask off the tires or you will have residue on there. Used about 3 cans of plasti dip for 4wheels, emblems, and grill.

I did mine on my is3 if it gets on the tires you can simply wipe it off. Used 4 cans on my wheels did front and back of rims. Held up "ok" then started having peeling

Save yourself some time and get them powder coated. I did mine a year ago with no issues. Also shop around for pricing. I got mine done for $400

i recently bought a set of oem rims (2 of them were bent from previous owner) from CL, and they were plasti-dipped...
the owner said he picked sprayed it black, but looked like dark purple...
since i live in texas, im assuming the the weather (sun/heat/humidity/rain) played a role in the color change...

i peeled it off (the face of the rim) as it looked really tacky...

like others have already mentioned, i would just get them powder-coated...

because of the condition of the rims. the expensive part wasn't going to be the powder coating, it was going to be the process before powdercoating, because the wheels aren't in the best condition. but regardless, definitely way too much.

i live in the middle of nowhere in connecticut, unless i wanted to drive hours away or ship them, that's the only place i can get them done, unfortunately. i'm probably just going to powdercoat them for now while im saving money for nicer rims. it'll do for now if i do it right.
