Default Steering wheel removal

Is it really necessary to use a steering wheel puller to get the steering wheel off? I saw a sewell Lexus steering swap video on youtube and the guy was yanking on the wheel. Will that cause any damage? Also he didn't disconnect the battery I'm no mechanic but I think it would of been wise to do so.

Disconnect the battery is a must. Make a mark on shaft, nut and steering wheel. Loosen nut halfway off shaft. See if wheel can just slide off pulling gently and evenly. If not, tap from back side at 3 & 9 oclock with hands. No luck means a puller. 90% of the time i only need a puller on older american made vehicles. Good luck

yup. disconnect battery, wait at least 10 minutes for the SRS system to lose its charge. pull the driver airbag off the wheel, then disconnect the spiral cable plug. loosen the 19mm bolt holding the steering wheel, then wiggle back and forth and the wheel should come free. no need puller......
