Default question on getting a new key for my car

I just picked up a 02 is300 with 63k miles for 7800 but the owner gave me the keys in pieces. If i want a new key, can i just buy a replacement key and get it cut and use it or do i need to get the key cut and coded with the car?

Thanks!

Is the remote part of the key in one piece? If it is then you can just buy a key shell on ebay and have it cut at a locksmith or etc. to the shape of your key and swap the remote part out and you will be good to go.

Inside the original key is the transponder and keyless entry. If you are using the keyless entry key you can swap the transponder to a new shell from ebay with a blank to be cut, but if you are using the secondary key that looks like the keyless key, but has no keyless buttons (like when I got my car), you must fork out the money for the key, key cut, and key program which you have to do from lexus because they have the code in the computer at HQ and won't program a precut key.

The transponder is part with buttons inside the keyless entry (plastic) part.

The physical key (metal) doesn't get "coded"
But you will have to find a locksmith that can cut them, or take it to the dealership.

Yes you can follow a DIY to get the transponder to respond to your car.

hope you have a master key that u can get the code off of. if not you might have to do a whole new immobilizer ecu which lexus will do a one time free replacement on but you still have to pay for the keys and the labor of install and reprogram.

You are missing a key and that is where you are confusing the facts.

There is:

- Master Transponder W/keyless
- Slave Transponder W/o Keyless
- Wallet W/o transponder W/o keyless

So as flav's said above and I implied:

Inside the original key is the transponder and keyless entry. You MUST have the Master with keyless, not just the one that isn't "metal".

Sorry OLT I didn't read your post if you already covered what I said.

I was just telling him that there is no "security" chip in the metal part of the key preventing it from being duplicated.
My gf has an 09 Audi, she was told that her key (all metal) had some kind of chip in there as a security feature. (dealership told this to her)
And I told her she's crazy and there is no chip imbedded in the metal.
So we made a duplicate (duplicate of just the metal part) and it stated the car no problem.

When her remote part died they told her that she has to bring it in to get reprogrammed and updated.
I told her that they are just trying to get her $$.. Took the remote apart, went to radio shack, got a $5 battery, put it in and it's good as new...

Same thing with my xgf and her little blazer.
There was a little plastic/rubber button, supposed to be some kinda of key duplication prevention thing..
Again, went made a duplicate and had no issue..
People believe all kinds of crazy chit that people tell them.

9 times out of 10... not real
Not gonna put that kind of technology on a $10,000 chevy blazer.
Don't believe me, find someone with one of these keys and put a voltmeter on it.
Then spend $1 and go to walmart to make a copy, car will unlock & start same as with the "special" key

It is very common to get a slave key instead of a master key when buying used, I just want to make sure he knows which is which. It has a transponder, it starts your car, but it cannot make a duplicate of itself.

Just curious, what do you mean by "it can't make a duplicate of itself?"
Are you saying you can have only one transponder key per car?
If that's true I'm unaware & might have to put that to the test.

llllllllll , Slave key transponder cannot duplicate itself, only master.

rayy117, you have all the keys, master and slave, so you can duplicate yours. You must use the one with the keyless buttons as the master to duplicate from, the one without keyless (slave key) cannot be used even though it has a transponder in it.
