Which one?
Hi,
I will soon be in the market to get a new car. I am leaving the Honda scene and now coming to the Lexus/Toyota scene.
What I have in mind are either the 02-05 IS300 5spd, 01-05 GS300, or 01-05 GS430.

The IS has the most things you can modify.
If you're looking for a nice comfortable car, the GS430 is the nicest and most comfortable of the three.
There's a lot of people on this forum and my.is who basically welcome new people who get their first Lexus like this:
"Congratulations on your purchase! Now ruin the suspension, melt the fenders with a heat gun, put huge rims that make it ride terribly, and put cheap replica body kits on it so no one can tell that it was ever a nice car at one point! Quick!"
To that crowd, the IS is really attractive because they're cheap now, and there's a bunch of junky parts on ebay for them. I've got a 2002 IS300 Sportcross totally stock, and it's a wonderful car. I like it even better than my 2009 IS250, but I know a GS is technically a nicer car.
You could modify a GS430, but you'd likely make it worse rather than better, since it's already built to very high standards and has lots of nice standard equipment. http://www.lexus.com/cpo/model_library/GS/2005.html

If I were to get a IS300, I would drop a 2jzgte but once I finish college in 4-5 years.
Is there a really big difference in interior space between the IS and GS?

The IS has a pretty tiny back seat. You have a lot more rear seat legroom in the GS. Other than that, it's not a huge difference, depending on how tall you are. I'm only 5'6" so the IS has plenty of headroom for me lol
The thing to consider is also how the cars will have likely been treated. IS's are typically bought by younger people, so they might have been abused more than a little old lady's GS430. Either way, you'll want to do your homework on the specific car you're considering buying, like Carfax etc.
If I was in the market for a used car, and the price wasn't a big issue, I'd definitely consider the 3UZ V8 in the GS430 as an attractive selling point. Between the inline six GS300 and IS300, I'd take the IS300. It's got sportier styling inside and out, with a lot of attention to detail. The GS is a little bland by comparison. The IS also has a really good stock stereo. With the GS you'd want to find one with a Mark Levinson stereo if possible.

depends on what your looking for, looking for a fun car, toy car, your looking at the is. otherwise i would take the gs430, power and lux. even though the gs300 is nice, if you got the cash i would go with the 430. hey, you gotta pay to play man. haha. good luck!

You're right man. Got to pay to play. The only problem I am having is that I love driving manual transmissions. Automatics are boring for me lol. I wish they made a GS with a manual transmission.
